I get that this is a bad year financially for the university, but I don't see how Pruitt would survive a two-win season. It's a bad year for the coffers of every school, yet that won't prevent numerous programs from making coaching changes and an eight-game losing streak is surely enough to show Pruitt the door if there's even a chance of a stronger candidate coming to Knoxville.

I don’t think no is the economical time to fire him but at 2-8 I think they have too.

It all depends on if the costs of firing him are greater than the cost of fan apathy. South Carolina made the determination that it was, but they also were in year 5 of Muschamp and many of their people wanted him fired at the end of last season, but the buyout was stupid big. The buyout amount came down noticeably this year, and they still suck, so the decision was easier.

I voted based on what I want to happen (fired). Unfortunately, fulmer will have to be fired first for anything to happen with Pruitt. That’s his only chance to make a hired and he’ll fight for him to the end. But it’s over. Pruitt is a nice guy amd hard worker. But he’s not a highly intelligent guy. And he’s a crappy communicator. You can get by as a defensive position coach with those deficiencies. But not as the ceo of a multi billion dollar entity. And that’s what Tennessee football is. Why delay the inevitable? The powers that be been to be together behind close doors and start working on an exit strategy

At this point, who isn't a stronger candidate? As to whether they'll come to Knoxville or not, is another story.

Fulmer will never fire Pruitt, regardless of the record this year, or next. As long as Fulmer is AD, Pruitt will be here, because firing him, would require Fulmer to admit that he made a poor choice, and that is beyond the capabilities of his ego.
I don't disagree, but I could also see Fulmer striking a deal with the powers that be to fire Pruitt if that meant he got to keep his job. He's always been good at licking his finger, sticking it up in the air, and figuring out which way the wind is blowing.

I'd want him fired if he goes 2-8, but I don't think Fulmer would.

This. But he will be a very unpopular coach to start next season (unless he somehow pulls a miracle and claws back to 5-5, which is beyond highly unlikely).

Yes and no here, I think.
If Fulmer has an iron-clad, sure fire, winning bigger name guy locked down (like a Freeze, Bob Stoops, Meyer, etc level guy) then he will fire Pruitt this year.

Otherwise it's as you said no way Fulmer does anything unless he save face out of the deal.

No, the 2 yr extension cost and covid excuse saves him for another year. But he will be at the top of the coach hot seat list starting next yr. As was said by another poster above, losing to KY and Vandy gets you fired at UT.

No. He's here through 2021 regardless.

Also would be foolish to fire him right now given the recruiting class. Wait until a non-Covid season and give him another year to start fixing the QB issues.

If we lose to a winless Vandy team, it would be foolish to keep him.....

I think he survives purely because of financial reasons. Personally I want to give him a chance to build a program but even during a rebuild, there should be no reason a coach should stay on at Tennessee with that embarrassing record. If he has a repeat of this season next year then he’s gone no matter what imo. I would sit him down after the season and give him two options: 1.) Resign now if you can’t handle this job or 2.) I’ll give you one more season and if I don’t see drastic improvement, you’re fired.
