1998 Vols...Still in Top 3 Teams All Time

To emphasize how he calculates his rankings I will repost this part here.

Secondly, each team’s rating is a reflection of what that team actually accomplished on the field of play relative to the schedule they played. Indeed, teams farther down on the list may have been more talented in personnel, and may have been able to beat teams ranked higher on this list. However, those teams did not have an opportunity to prove it, simply because their schedule that season was not as difficult as some of the teams above them. Also remember, these rankings do not include margin of victory, so once again, some teams you may feel were more dominate than those ranked above them simply did not have an opportunity to have that reflected in these rankings

2001 Miami is number 17. That makes it completely inaccurate, no matter how it was calculated.

2001 Miami

November 24, 2001 W 65-7 #1 #12 Washington Orange Bowl - Miami, FL
December 1, 2001 W 26-24 #1 @ #14 Virginia Tech* Lane Stadium - Blacksburg, VA
January 3, 2002 W 37-14 #1 #4 Nebraska Rose Bowl - Pasadena, CA

6 ranked teams 3 in the top 10

Seems like for the system he is using to rank teams the rankings make sense to me.

nice to see someone gets it because it makes no sence to me. I like that we are in the 5 though.

Doesn't seem too confusing.

Ranking teams on how "talented' or "good the were" is a very subjective and hard to judge way of ranking.

Ranking teams on their results by the teams that they played and beat is a much easier thing to measure and rank.

Make more sense now?

The thing is, when most people rank their "best teams of all time," what they usually have in mind is the team that could beat any other team from any other year. People don't dispute that the list is accurate according to his criteria and system; what people are going to dispute is the fact that "what they actually accomplished on the field" is a better way to rank all-time teams than "who would win if they played each other."

If 09 Bama lined up against 01 Miami, it wouldn't be "I'll see your win over #14 Syracuse and raise you a win over #9 LSU." It would be Andre Johnson vs. Gilbert Arenas, Bryant McKinnie vs. Marcell Dareus, Julio Jones vs. Ed Reed, etc.

Of course its subjective to just play out in my head 95 Nebraska vs 04 USC, 01 Miami vs 44 Army, etc. But it's also unfair to say 01 Miami was a worse all-time team than 09 Alabama simply because of how the 12 teams on their respective schedules ended up faring in those years.

Have a problem with the #1 team.

I doubt they beat the '05 Longhorns.
Know without question they could not beat the '01 Canes.

not really.. He is picking one team a yr. and then ranking the year. how does a 2 loss team in 97 end up on the list when 2 teams went undefeated.

I have no problem with the list and it should be looked at for what it is. Nothing more, nothing less.

Surprised to see 2009 Alabama as the #1 team. Would have never guessed that one. Also surprised that UF was only 35th.

The list is interesting for discussion, but hard to take seriously.

94 nebraska is not better than 95 nebraska, I don't care what measurement you try to use.

I didn't realize he left the Wizards to play cornerback for Bama.

The guy tried I guess but that list is not even remotely accurate on any level. Sorry but I wouldn't even rank UT in the top 10 IMO. But I know their definitely not top 5 material.

agreed, that 01 miami team is the best i have ever seen.
But I still think its an interesting list.

Personally the 95 Nebraska is best I ever seen. I mean they destroyed eventual NC gators for 96. On top of that they beat top notch Miami in 94 with Sapp year before 95 season. 95 Nebraska would take 09 bama to the woodshed. But all we have is opinions

If you read it, his list isn't based on who could beat who, its what they did on the field that year
