1998 team vs. 2016 team unit by unit match up?

No joke...how many straight completions did Tee have against USC jr.??? 23...24

Accuracy debate over

Not really. That USC, Jr. Team was pretty awful (1-10 record). Tee only went 9/26 against Syracuse, and only completed 57.2% of his passes on the season in 1998. With that said, I agree that Martin was slightly better at throwing a deep ball than Dovbs, but I think Dobbs is by far a more dynamic runner than Martin.

Ya'll are puffin if you think Dobbs is better then Tee Martin atp. Plus plug Tee into this offense and he completes a higher percentage of passes (and hit them in stride better) opening up the run (which is the correct order this offense should opperate) by him and our backs better.

What have we seen with Dobbs this year? His deep ball has improved. That cannot be debated. When that has happened, the OL has played well. Now, Tee had the much better WR, RB and OL. So using your argument, how about plug Dobbs into 1998's team with all that talent. With his ability to shred defenses with his legs? With the 1998 offensive talent the 98 squad had and Dobbs abilities, the Vols would have been an absolute nightmare for any team.

There is really no comparison between the 16 and 98 teams and frankly its just unfair.

Plug Tee into this offense and he goes 10-27 or 9-26. We won a championship with that kind of quarterbacking.

Barnett, Sutton, and Tuttle are the closest team 120 have to 98 team...on Defense....Edge goes to '98 Defense....

Darwin Walker better at this point than Tuttle
Ellis and Barnett pretty much a push....Barnett better pass rusher....Ellis better run stopper....

LBs--'98 and don't even try.....JRM would NEVER SEE the field on that '98 team--even as a backup....

Goodrich, Grant and others better than Sutton, Kelly, and others...

Peerless Price as KR and Evan Berry pretty much even....I think Berry a little better as a KR...

Offensively--'98 better across the board.....Tee and Dobbs are amazingly similar....Tee has stronger arm for sure....hard for true comparison since Tee's OL was SOOO MUCH BETTER than present OL.....

RBs--would have loved to see HURD in that '98 offense behind that OL.....probably runs for 2,000 yds easy....

Healthy Jamaal Lewis gets edge over HURD because he could find the seam and house it from anywhere...but he had a MUCH, MUCH better OL...and Shawn Bryson is way under-rated for how good he actually was.....

WRs--very similar.....I'll take '98 as a group

Punter and Punt Returns....Sutton better than Goodrich in '98....punters push...

'98 team would CRUSH current team....better OL would wear down '16 inexperienced and young DL....and completely obliterate '16 LBs from the face of the earth....and yes, that includes a healthy Kirkland and JRM....those guys would NEVER survive the pounding the '98 OL inflicted on MOST of our competition...and would have a tough time just tackling the '98 backs....

Would be hard for me to think Dobbs wouldn't throw 2 or 3 ints against the '98 D.....and he'd be running for his life every time he went back to pass with '16 OL....

IMO--'98 team would crush '16 team... 34-14...34-17...

Hell this entire defensive line plus a couple of backups on it will get drafted.

Don't bet on it.....

O'brien and Vickers might sign as free agents, but only Tuttle looking NFL caliber right now....

McKenzie hasn't shown squat, but he is still young....and has size, but he plays SLOW...and too high...needs better leverage, better hands, and a quicker move off the snap...certainly NOT giving up on him.....but when is he going to actually show up and be disruptive???

Barnett truly a beast....has everything and is ready for next level. Vereen has the work ethic and motor....but he's a tweener in the NFL....If he runs a fast 40 he might get drafted in 4th or 5th round....

Latroy Lewis--no way.....

Only sure thing to make NFL draft so far are Barnett and Tuttle...

Yeah, because now the replay booth would have cost us the Arkansas game.

I don't know why you think that....could you clarify?

I believe we almost got shafted in that game by a blown call with 2:56 to play in the game when the Arky punter kicked the ball thru the end-zone FROM THE FIELD OF PLAY.....

He could do that if the ball was in his end zone, but the rule does not allow him to do that from the 10 yd line.
We should have had the ball 1st and goal from inside the 10 yd line instead of receiving just 2 points for a safety. The SEC office made that clear in the week following the game.

And, assuming we score a TD in 4 plays or less from there....We would've been up 27-24 with 2 minutes or less to play in the game.

So--I think replay would've helped us in that game. :salute:

As far as I can tell the fumble would not have changed. Unless his knee or elbow hit the ground with the ball in his hand, it would still be called a fumble.

Accuracy debate over

Don't understand this line of thinking at all. Dobbs completed 70% of his passes vs Ohio, does that make him a more accurate passer than Manning, Clausen or Shuler, who each had a career completion % in the low 60s?

Tee, and his receivers, had that one incredible day vs SCar in 1998.....and the rest of his career, in 38 games played, he completed 53.6% of his passes.....accuracy debate over indeed. Tee was one of the most inaccurate passers in Tennessee program history.

Dobbs has a ways to go before being mentioned with Casey goat Clausen and Tee Natty Martin.

No he doesn't. He's been not been nearly as good as Clausen from the pocket and he didn't beat Florida on the road last year, but the gap between those two isn't nearly as wide as you're saying.

As far as a comparison to Tee.....in my mind it's already no comparison....better passer, far more dynamic runner/playmaker....I'll take Josh all day everyday.

From this year you take Dobbs. WR is probably a push though 2016 hasn't proven that yet. Everything else is 1998. Especially offensive coordinator.

I'm just as excited as anyone else about this team, but the '98 team was ridiculous on defense. I'm pretty sure we had 11 guys from the defense on that team who STARTED for NFL teams. That won't happen with our current defense. Also, the offensive line was much better on the '98 team. It's fun to compare but I don't think this team is nearly as good as the '98 team. That being said (as someone who attended games in '98 and this year), the offense right now is further along than the '98 offense and has a chance to be superior. I also think the SEC of 2016 is MUCH stronger than the SEC of 1998 so comparisons are tough in that area also.

it doesn't matter, the 01 roster was better than both. just whiffed in the SEC title game against a SAban led LSU team, that wound up being pretty good themselves the next year iirc.
