1998 Running Game

I had an appendectomy Saturday, so as someone who was really bored watching ESPN, i decided to borrow some tapes from the 1998 season from my grandfather. I watched the UF, UGA, & Alabama games. The one thing I noticed (other than how fast our D closed) was how quick our RB's hit the hole, all three of them. There was no shufflin around, no waiting for the hole to get bigger. It was find hole, run through hole hard, and get as many yards as you can. I've noticed the last few years we have gotten away from that, more noticeably Foster. Now almost all the backs we have had the last 5-7 years have done that, but especially Foster and Cedric Houston. I believe that Kiffin is getting back to that and it will not only help the RB's, but are O-Line knowing they don't have to create a huge hole, but just one lil' hole that the backs will hit.

Yes they were better, and they were better prospects coming out of highschool. This shouldn't be a huge surprise. I think Arian Foster overachieved for the type of highschool prospect that he was.

Oh i agree, they were without question better talents, and even better lines, but what i was saying is that the RB's hit the hole. They didn't dance, didn't hesitate, they just found the hole and ran through it. I'm not comparing Foster to Lewis, Henry. But you watch the games of 98 to the ones of the last few years and you'll understand what i'm saying

I agree that Foster didn't really "hit the hole hard", but that's not the type of back that he was. I think Arian's smooth running technique worked for him. He was a back that waited for plays to develop which got him a bunch of good yards.

If we can get our passing game serviceable enough to take the pressure off of the running game, I'll bet Bryce Brown & Oku will remind us of Lewis & Henry

I don't think we even scored that much in that game, but that was one of the worst physical beatings I've ever seen. Quincy Carter got flat out abused.

Nope it was 22-3. It was the game right after Jamal tore his acl. Tee played terrible in the 1st half, but did better in the 2nd and the O-Line took over. Al Wilson was playing with a discolated shoulder and was still everywhere. I think he had 10 tackles and two sacks. Also Deon Grant could cover some ground, Damn.

We are returning to the power run game this year. Run to set up the pass.

Oku and Brown = Thunder and Lightening

You really won't know anything about Brown and Oku until the real hitting starts in the UCLA game.

I think it's easier to hit the hole with confidence when you know 9 times out of 10 that it was going to be there (Riley, Clifton, Coleman, etc.). I don't remember people complaining too much about Foster's running style in '07.
