1985 Sugar Bowl: Vols had no chance…but

1985 season. But the 1986 Sugar Bowl (1/1/1986)

As already pointed out and acknowledged, it was Jeff Powell with the 60 yard 3rd quarter run to go up 28-7 which pretty much finished off Miami. He blew by Miami’s secondary (Bennie Blades) untouched despite Keith Jackson and Frank Broyles never shutting up about their blazing speed. Johnny Majors and Ken Donahue gave UT fans a masterpiece that day. Other than Miami’s opening drive and Mark Hovanic spiking the ball after recovering a fumble and drawing a 15 yard penalty (he was kind of excited), UT played an almost flawless game.

Tony Thompson had the 4th quarter 1 yard dive over the line of scrimmage for the winning score in the 1991 Sugar Bowl versus Virginia. UT hasn’t been back to the Sugar Bowl in 33 years. Dooley was a WR on that Virginia team. Their band was an embarrassing clown show making fun of Elvis and, IIRC, hillbillies.

Jackson and Broyles were nauseating during the game. After the Vols first touchdown and they recapped the length of the drive…. I think it was Broyles…. Said “that’s pretty good for TN” as if they were incapable

I was 26 then and I remember the players saying afterwards how much Donahue made them run up and down the stadium steps that week to build up their toughness and endurance. It worked!

Vols D stuffed Miami and wreaked havoc! Daryl Dickey and Tony Thompson scored! Vols stomped the canes! The national press all said we had no hope! Vols win in Athens!
Not to burst the bubble, but Miami had nothing to play for and wasn’t focused. They were ranked 4th and had no shot at the national title. They thought they could show up and win due to talent alone.

Georgia’s season is on the line tomorrow. They’re pissed off beyond belief and will be super focused. Gonna be a long night for us, I’m afraid.

Hope you’re wrong but agree…..different set of circumstances altogether. They want this as much as we do and they’re playing at home.

A little different scenario. UT had the home crowd; outnumbered Miami 2-1. Ga at home, backs against the wall, their very PROGRAM is on the line. Yes, it's that serious for them. LOUD? As loud as Neyland, will have an effect on the Good Guys. As much as I want Tennessee to win, it's as tough a game as they have had since 2022 @ Uga. Don't get too hyped, uga has a 70% chance to win. Can UT play a perfect game in that environment? They haven't yet.

They were wretched. Was in N.O. with wife & 5-year old son as the Vols shook the football world! Let's repeat the process tonight in Athens.
