I was at that game my freshman year at UT. What a game! The police had to block off the strip because it was a sea of people. Seemed like we had lost the last several games against THE BEAR so this one was huge!:dance2:

My grandfather was a lifetime Vol fan and liked to keep a scrapbook of newspaper headlines of big victories....His favorite was the News-Sentinel front page headline after the '82 Bama game "Vols Dam The Tide!".....Classic.

Did anyone else notice that noone in the stadium was wearing orange?....I saw 1 or 2 people wearing orange...everyone was wearing regular clothes....just looked odd ...now of course the entire stadium is orange on gameday

I believe we lost the previous 12 games against them.

I was a soph that year. Sat in DD but caught up with the goal post as it was being carried out the Northeast side - it went across the ramp at the University Center onto volunteer and up Cumberland to the intersection with 17th street.

Smokin Dave and the Premo Dopes played at Hobo's that night.

It was a perfect Saturday.

My cousin and I were talking during the game Saturday, about when we would go to the games in the late 70's early 80's the Johhny Major era (know as best dressed coach in NCAA) we always dressed in dress pants, blouses, wool blazers, dress shoes...
So different from today with all the jersey's, Vol t-shirts, painted bodies..

I, too, was a Soph, but I had to work a keg beneath the stadium at the worlds fair during the game. You could almost tell the score from the sound of the crowd.
Do you remember seeing the t-shirts saying 'The Bear beats off?" They were there, I swear...

The headline in the Nashville Banner the next day was something like, "They Couldn't Halt Gault!" I think it's in a scrapbook back at my parents' house somewhere. I was 8 at the time, so that was the first UT win over Bama in my lifetime.

Just for the record, since these threads are archived:
Bama had won the previous 11, 1971 through 1981.

And re the stadium apparel: it WAS a different time. First, about the only place you could buy UT merchandise was at the UT Bookstore, the other bookstores on the Strip and the stands set up around the stadium. Not like today where you can get it everywhere. And second, as heretical as it sounds today, it was considered uncool to wear all Orange to the games -- particularly by the students.

An absolutely amazing experience. I was 12 and it was my first visit to Neyland. I can remember the Bama fans seated nearby saying "don't kick it to Gault" before kickoffs and punts. Wow, what an introduction to college football.

I remember that game very well. Relatives from Nashville attended each bama game at home or away without fail. They sent me the headlines and stories from Sundays Tennessean posted on my fridge until they crumbled from old age. I took a lot of crap about Vol football in those days as I had shot off my mouth about how the Vols would be top 5 team each year with Majors return to his alma mater. Nobody up here really cared, they just liked giving me crap!! John Ward could definitely give you goosebumps. Anyone have film I would be interested too.
