I tend to piss off Kentucky fans on SEC Rant anytime a national championship discussion is brought up. They like to claim 1950 because they beat AP/UPI champion Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. They also finished 1950 with one loss, to Tennessee. The Vols finished the season also with one loss.

Kentucky gets the SEC title by virtue of having more wins than Tennessee in conference play even though both had a conference loss.

Poll finishes: UT 3/4 - UK 7/7

Kentucky thinks their claim has more merit because they defeated AP/UPI champion Oklahoma.

Even though bowls didn’t matter back then, if the entire season is counted as a whole, Tennessee has more of a claim than Oklahoma and Kentucky.

1950: Tennessee > Kentucky

Didn’t Tennessee beat Texas in Dallas that year? Clearly more impressive than beating OU in Miami.

I love the Vols. However I think they would be underrated sitting at #7. They only lost to TN, a high ranked team, and then beat the #1 ranked team.

Who did TN lose too? If the team was an unranked nobody they would have seem to have passed the eye test better than us. I give it to Kentucky all day if I'm being honest... and I hate Kentucky, lol.

I think we may have lost to Mississippi State in the first game of the season IIRC.

Edit: I am correct we lost to Mississippi State 7-0 in the second game of the season. The only reason we beat Kentucky is we had a coach named Neyland and they had some inferior coach named Bryant.

You sir, are welcome here anytime. Pissing off Kentucky fans is always a worthwhile endeavor.

Kentucky has little logic. Same record and we beat them head to head in the next to last game of the season. Tennessee finished the season on a 10 game win streak, You'd never find a single poll that includes the ability reason that would rank Kentucky higher had that happened in any year in football history.

It's the same logic by which Bama claims '41 and UT claims '40 and '67: a math system spit them out. And there are many other examples. It's ridiculous, but it's part of the silliness that is college football.

Hey Oklahomey: I'm a Vol/Sooner fan since I lived in Okla in the Switzer era during the short Marcus Dupree era.... I always think anybody from OU knows their football, and that's why I'm excited about Heupel.... One of my favorite all-time games was the '67 OU-Tenn Orange Bowl-- just wondered, whatever happened to OU QB Bobby Warmack? He mentioned that game at the end of this video as helping elevate OU's recruiting leading into the Switzer era. BTW: which OU forum is good these days?

Hey Volle! You have a few years on me, some great glory years as you got to witness the great seventies with the Sooners. I really didn’t start grasping the concept of OU football until the early 90s, the worst decade for OU football. I’m 37 and have enjoyed some highs and even more lows as an OU fan.

Oklahoma is 7-6 since 1999 vs. the SEC overall yet 0-5 in BCSNCG/CFP games. Have to get past that hurdle someday. I’ve seen some of those live, yuck!

I know Alabama and Tennessee fans have a strong dislike for each other, but as an outsider, both fan bases of the Tide and Vols are among the best in the country (don’t downvote me, lol).

I don’t follow much on former players and their whereabouts. Player stats, numbers, etc. isn’t my thing. But I do enjoy learning about the good old days and the history.

There are paid message boards which I think is a joke in itself. That’s like having to pay money to step outside to breathe air. Dirtburglars is good. It’s not as busy during the off-season but it’s still good. Other than that, finding a good non-pay OU board is like OU finding a defense vs. an SEC team in a meaningful bowl game.

I’m ready for Tennessee to get back to their glory days. They’ve been down for far too long. And if Heupel is the one to do it then that’s extra special.

I remember randomly watching highlights of the 2003 Tennessee/Miami game and it ended in a 10-6 Vols win. You certainly don’t see games like that anymore between good teams.

2001 Tennessee would have been a very good opponent for Miami. Perhaps a SugarVols II setup in the Rose Bowl. And speaking of the SugarVols. Had it not been for the two ties in 1985, and everything still played out like it did, Vols win the 1985 national title.

It’s too bad 1984-1985 Florida was on probation and bowl bans. They went 18-2-2 those two seasons and were national championship worthy.

Tennessee has a lot of proud history in football. Some highs and some lows. The above seasons mentioned had some highs, what-ifs, etc. but definitely better than abysmal seasons. Soon, your fan base shall help with the resurrection of Rocky Top football and all its glory!

Another reason for my admiration for Tennessee goes beyond football. Pat Summitt (RIP) is by far the most iconic woman in collegiate athletics for what she has done for the game and women as a whole to this day. I firmly believe she is the only woman who could coach men at the Division I level and the NBA. I always felt she did things the right way and with class, much more than that slimeball at Connecticut.

Oh Rocky Top you’ll always be, a classy fan base to me, Good ole Rocky Top, Rocky Top Tennessee!!!

...Alabama...fans...among the best....

How many drops of urine does it take before you won't drink that gallon of sweet tea?

Oh, just one?

Then that explains why no one is gonna drink your mostly-delicious response, Oklahoma. You put in TWO drops.

Do better, sir.

I’m not defending Florida for their actions. It’s more of a “what if” thing. The Alabama bit is true. I’ve been to three Tennessee games and four Alabama games. From my experience as an outsider, both fans were great.

And my previous response is quite delicious. Cracker Barrel pecan pancakes delicious!
