In context, the most amazing line in that article was the bit about a Vols touchdown pass setting the tone for the match.

The forward pass was still very new to football in those years. Few teams used it much. Probably about as common as an onside kick today. Was considered a gimmick. Our 1914 squad was trailblazing, apparently.
