1914

In context, the most amazing line in that article was the bit about a Vols touchdown pass setting the tone for the match.

The forward pass was still very new to football in those years. Few teams used it much. Probably about as common as an onside kick today. Was considered a gimmick. Our 1914 squad was trailblazing, apparently.

Go Vols!

Vanderbilt went up the hill to try to play some ball.
Vanderbilt came down the hill defeated by the Vols.

By Jingo, we’ll win.

Well, see, the Kaiser had that gimpy arm. Quarterbacks didn’t want to embarrass anybody by showing that they had regular arms, let alone a big arm.

"Vols beat Vandy on her home lot"

1. Didn't know Vandy is a she. Seems about right.
2. Guess she didn't even have a field back then as they played in a parking lot. Again. About par for Vandy.

LET THE BUTTWHOOPING COMMENCE!
