'19 FL PG Tre Mann

Need to fire those bums over there immediately.

I am a big Rick Barnes fan. No arguing with the success he had last year and I am very optimistic about this years team. But, if he were to miss out on Mann and UT ends up with a class of Pember, Gaines and this other point guard, I think it is fair to say it would be a disappointment. It would be fair to question Barnes and his staff's ability to close on a kid we should have an advantage recruiting thanks to Lanier's previous relationship. This should be a year we attract those top tier players. FWIW I still think we have a good shot at getting Mann and I like the potential of Pember.

98% agree.

Pember is not that kind of player....unless he has a prep school year and gains 30lbs or more

I did say the potential of Pember. He obviously needs to get stronger. But I understand he is pushing 6'10 now and has some nice guard skills.

I think Pember and Gaines are both going to be very good players for Tennessee. After what he did last year it is obvious that he can spot talent, coach it and put a good team together. Something I had my doubts about.

I am amazed at the comments some people make about his recruiting after what the Vols did last year and what they are going to do this year. Tennessee will have the best team in the league. Baring injury they will win the league. When was the last time a Tennessee team won back-back SEC titles.

I agree with your general point, only thing I would mention is that even though it might be a recruiting “disappointment” it doesn’t automatically mean it’s going to lead to a disappointing outcome. We’ve missed on some guys in every class and yet we had a Top 5 season in program history last year and stand to be the highest preseason ranked Tennessee team in program history as well, so I wouldn’t just assume missing on guys means a whole lot other than that we simply missed.

Believe me, I wish recruiting was more active/fun...I’m the weird guy who would buy Madden but never play a game, I would start a franchise and spend all my time building the team, making trades etc and simulate the season. Same thing for NCAA Football, would recruit for hours, build my depth chart and then simulate the season and do it all again. I just have always been interested in that side of things and so I wish we were landing our top guys every single time, but the end result is what matters most and if they keep winning like they did last year then it just is what it is with recruiting.

I am a Rick Barnes fan. He has done a great job. He has found some hidden gems and developed players well. But, if UT wants to remain at the highest level we need to land some of these top recruits. Sometimes it's about X's and O's and sometimes about Jimmies and Joes. I think it's ok to criticize recruiting even as you recognize the overall outstanding job Barnes and his staff have done. I want UT to remain a top level program and I would love to see some foundation pieces coming in place in 19 to keep us there. I am not sure our current recruits are those pieces.

I’d still like to sign Mann because he’s obviously a great player but it’s kind of a d*ck move on his part for leading Rick Barnes & his staff on considering they’ve put 100% effort into his recruitment.

Considering the reports mentioning how confident the staff feels about Mann, it would be a major let down if we didn’t land him.

However, you can’t blame Barnes if he goes elsewhere. I think Mann blowing up and getting more big time offers went to his head resulting in getting an ego.

Hopefully he doesn’t have that mindset thinking he’s too good for Tennessee.

Mann hasn't done anything wrong. He could no less predict a jump in interest from other schools anymore than you or I. Him stepping back and reevaluating things now is a lot better than following thru with his original timeline, committing to a school, and then continuing to flirt with other schools and eventually decommitting much later in the process.

These type situations is why you never stop recruiting and evaluating kids as backup options. If we miss on Mann and wind up taking a kid ranked in the 200s with offers from Florida Atlantic and George Mason, then it's our staff's fault, not Mann's.

Recruiting expectations of the coaches may differ from those of the most rabid fans.

Barnes' expectations are likely in close alignment with Fulmer's. Run a clean program the school can be proud of and have some success.

Don't have to be one of the best but be good. A program you can be proud to talk about on the Big Orange Caravan. A program which does no harm to the football program.

That’s my point though, in 2015/2016 people were saying Admiral, Turner, Alexander, Williams and Bowden weren’t foundational pieces of a Top 25 program...in actuality they were foundational pieces of a Top 15 program. So who is to say Jalen Johnson, Yves Pons, DJ Burns etc. aren’t going to turn out similar? Nobody knows either way, but I definitely don’t think one should assume they won’t be especially considering Barnes just proved that theory wrong already.

Fair enough. Maybe the players you mentioned will become those pieces. I just hoped that with our on court success we would be pulling in some higher rated players this year.

Imo Nobody is wrong here. Mann of course has every right to re open and explore his options in order to make the best decision for him. And despite having an unbelievable season last year, with players that didn’t move the recruiting ranking needle, I think it is a valid early concern for fans that the staff can’t seem to pull a no doubt contributor. And it’s down right weird when taking into account the Mann family’s relationship with the Laniers. Jmo

I would definitely be disappointed with the results of this particular class of recruiting if they missed out on Mann and Walker, absolutely. But as it was said previously, that doesn't mean the results down the line would be disappointing if they have Pember, Gaines, and that other PG they offered. But yes, it would definitely be a disappointment on the front end, and you'd be right to question Barnes and his staff IMO.

So the announcement is off for sure.

Imo it's time to move on and likely we have with the other offer

That is what I take from it as well unless we know something no one else does. I would watch Memphis really close as Jerry Meyer has alluded too.

BTO made a great point about Memphis' depth chart. Lomax and Harris will be sophomores in Mann's freshman season. While there is talk about playing Harris off the ball for a few minutes, they will be the primary PG's. You can't really play a 3 guard lineup with all 3 under 6'1". Also, Lomax and Harris are playing all 4 years.

UT has the roster for Mann to play right away. This must be stressed to him. To me, that doesn't make sense for him to go to Memphis.

Agreed on memphis but they aren't even mentioned in his new list of schools. We have had plenty of time to stress our roster needs and playing time. As I said months ago I'd assume seeing Bone as a senior on that roster isn't a good thing for a kid that wants to be the guy immediately

UNC? I haven’t seen wanting to play immediately as a must in articles about Mann. It’s been all about getting to the league, and now apparently(imo), being a blue blood.

The other 2 schools recently were throw ins, to make the girl might get turned down not feel so bad.

If Mann doesn’t go to a Kansas or Unc, I still think he’s Vol. He’s just doing some K mart shopping right now.(aka Blue Light Special)
