'18 FL QB Michael Penix Jr.

I may get roasted for this but despite his 3* ranking, he might be a bit better than Martinez.

Both are great QBs.

He's got every bit as much of a chance...and no injury (knock on wood) to recover from. I think these dynamics keep them both in the fold and ready to compete when their time arrives.

What position will this guy play after he is moved from QB? I'm thinking the staff will have him playing in the secondary or as a WR by next fall. Jennings 2.0

This won't be the popular opinion, but I'm not entirely convinced he isn't the best QB we have committed. Martinez hasn't played in a year, and Penix has used that time to really improve as a QB. I think the position switch talk is maybe a little premature.

Penix is pretty fast for a HS QB but he doesn't have the requisite speed to be an SEC-level DB or WR. IMO, he's a significantly better QB prospect than Jennings ever was but he is not the same caliber of athlete, so I don't think he'll end up at another position.

Can't wait to watch this kid play. I am going to try to get to a game. Will pass along any observations.

I lived in Seffner, right outside of Tampa, for about 4 years. I went to Armwood High and being an East Tennessee boy, going to Armwood and being handed a map of the school, on the first day, was a culture shock! Loved the football games, though.

I think after Sheriron Jones, that this fanciful notion of talented QBs giving up their dreams to start over at another position JUST FOR US is revealed as just that...fanciful.

Except for your escape clause, "just for us," this statement is preposterous. Of course no one will do it "just for us," but to suggest that there will never again be a QB change positions to get on the field is pretty... fanciful. Don't we have another QB in 19 who isn't projected to be a QB in college? I guess the escape clause applies there.

Didn't have an escape clause. We need to stop projecting the next Jauan Jennings before we even get the damn kid on campus. Penix will compete for the starting job AT QB with other talented QB prospects. If he doesn't win the spot, he'll do it somewhere else. The "never again" is your own invention, but it's unlikely...so good touch. :) There's a dramatic talent difference between JJ's signing and now. If a prospect doesn't switch immediately after the O&W game (as Jennings did) and attempts to ply his craft for one or two seasons, he's way too far behind players specifically recruited at other positions to realistically expect to contribute...unless he's that rare 4.3 40 running HS stud with no accuracy. I don't know which 19 prospect you're referring to, but if he's not PROJECTED as a QB I doubt that's what we're recruiting him as. Alontae Taylor was never referred to as a "QB commit" fwiw.

Who knew that the world could change so much in thre recruiting classes? Never another JJ? Never is a long time.

If you meant Penix wouldn't change positions, I would agree and you can just say that and not try to project a view on all future QBs. Maybe you got caught up in using the word fanciful, but your statement indicates that we will never see it again after SJ. So if that isn't what you mean, then what did you mean by (paraphrasing) "after Jones, the idea that any QB would change is fanciful?" Did you mean it might happen from time to time? If that's what you mean, then I don't think the notion is ...fanciful, do you?

When you strawman, you don't scrimp do ya? We're at the point where we're not taking flyers on athletes HOPING they can develop as top flight QBs. We recruit QBs. Jauan Jennings wanted a shot at QB so we "wink wink" accepted his commitment at that position...he was at another position (by his request) before Fall camp. In Butch's first season he recruited James Franklin at QB. We don't recruit the James Franklins at QB anymore. There's not enough room. If we sign a QB...that's what we're signing. There are always caveats of course. An athletic QB who damages his throwing shoulder/arm/whatnot but still wants to play. Our heartwarming conversation started with someone wondering about converting Penix if he eventually loses out to Martinez or another QB. I used the word fanciful in one post and you still haven't recovered...history? :hi:
