'17 VA DT/ATH Eric Crosby (UT signee)

Yep you people live in a bubble and I just don't think negative recruiting has that great of an impact. I have not seen one shred of first hand evidence. Call me a skeptic if you will.

Maybe because you aren't a recruit or a parent of a recruit or even associated with tennessee football? Lmao

Evidence? We don't need no stinkin' evidence. If we have evidence, we might miss a chance to panic.

Remind me again, which of the above are you?

You know no more actual factual information about it than he does. You're basing your opinion on what you read on here or what has been said on a radio show. Has any of those people on the radio said that a coach told them the Title IX lawsuit was effecting recruiting? If they haven't said they heard it from a coach at UT, then they are speculating themselves.

You choose to believe them. Newt chooses not to.

I personally believe it has some effect, but the amount of effect is pretty minimal. I believe there are other factors that carry a lot more weight. We have a pretty stacked roster. Most people we recruit this year will see little to no playing time this year. Those recruits are in wait and see mode. If we fall on our asses this year or don't live up to expectations, they will move on somewhere else. If we are the team everyone expects, they will join and won't mind waiting their turn.

Agree. We need elite DTs.

Yep. Wouldn't be a huge deal if they didn't have such a desperate need at DT along with the fact that they don't seem to be in on a lot of big-time DT's this cycle either. I'm shocked they've struggled so much with DT recruiting the last year and a half...

What's your opinion on the class so far and the outlook?

The DT situation in 2018 is scary. I hope KMack and Tuttle blow up this season and next, but if they do, they may leave early. That would leave us with only Picou from our current crop of DTs (assuming Johnson is reinstated and plays this year). We absolutely need studs who are ready to play as RS freshmen or sophomores in 2018 in addition to more JUCO guys who pan out.

I think VT having one of the top young coaches in the nation rebuilding their program in Crosby's backyard has more to do with him leaning in their direction than the lawsuit.

Crosby was a Vol lock just a few months ago, and the lawsuit was already filed and public knowledge. Fuente looks to be a force on the recruiting trail.

Recruiting is Fuente's weakness. I just spoke to a former Memphis player (80's) this morning who knew Fuente and staff. He said that Fuente had been leaving recruiting to his assistants. Many people don't realize that Larry Porter actually recruited some of the key players at Memphis, and Fuente was relying on some walk-ons. Fuente had said that the development of the walk-ons was good and bad. Good for development but bad that they couldn't recruit better. Not sure how much talent Fuente really left their new coach, Mike Novell, but Memphis folks are excited because Norvell's first class was pretty good. All that to say, Fuente has to get players at this level now.

The commitment list is very weak so far. Not really sure what to think at this point. One day it seems like they are in really good shape for several guys and then the next it seems like those guys are trending elsewhere. I'm definitely worried about the biggest need position which is clearly DT. I don't see them well positioned with many difference makers there.

There just aren't a lot of big name DTs this year. At least ones we are in on. Fuentes is new and can sell the stay and play for the home state routine. The same one CBJ has played the last 3 years. I always thought it would be a tough pull with a new coach and an instate player.

There has not been a flurry of crystal ball predictions yet to VT, so I'm still going to hold out hope.

Always the same with some of you posters I swear... You can be concerned without panicking.

I agree. But I think as a group, this board is way past concerned. Obsessed may be a better word. It has been brought up on nearly every recruits thread with no evidence that the recruits have given it a second thought. Butch's job is to go get players. Whether a lawsuit or bad weather or high pollen counts, he needs to overcome it, and his history over the past two years says that he can. So I'm not even particularly concerned. Butch can explain what is going on in five minutes. And I'm sure he does.

Yeah I remember the talk for the last year or more has been how awesome the 2017 class was gonna be for us, and how we need to make sure we have room for all the studs we're gonna be able to get.

And yet..........?

Sigh, I'm trying to be patient and not head over into negavol territory, as I know it's only April. But still, I'm sure most if not all of us expected better at this point.

Fuente wasn't that great of a recruiter but what he was excellent at was getting the most out of the players he got and fitting them to the scheme he ran

When hunter Johnson decommitted things went downhill. Then the title 9 stuff came out and the whole smear campaign on the university and butch hurt a lot. When we have a great season things will turn around. It'll just take a little time

I think what may be a side issue with the lawsuit is that with it being such big news, the parents are concerned of false accusations against their son and he gets booted off the team even if he did nothing wrong. UT is almost in the position that a kid gets accused then he is gone regardless.

It goes like this. We know your son Mr. Parent is a great kid and makes great choices and would be an asset as a player and student to our University and any other such as Tennessee. However, with what's going on over there, he could be falsely accused by a girl wanting to take advantage of him. Now, Coach Jones is a good guy and a great coach. But, this lawsuit has put him and the school in a position where they have to suspend the player immediately even if he has done nothing wrong. Do you want to take the chance that your son loses everything by sending him to a school that has to cut him loose and he loses everything just because they can't even appear right now that they would go easy on a kid, just because he plays football?

Why take the chance? We will take care of your son and he doesn't have to worry about a dark cloud hanging over him like he would at UT.
