Offered by Tennessee on 7/15. One of the top players in the class of 2017. Projects at S or WR in college. Plans to visit Tennessee before the start of the season.

Hunter can do it all on the football field. He is big, strong and athletic. He has great speed and is extremely physical. Hunter shows good concentration and has good ball skills. He is also smart and puts himself in position to make plays. Hunter has the ability to play quarterback, running back, wide receiver and safety. He has the potential to be one of the top prospects in his class. - Michael Clark

“They’re a big time football school,” said Hunter about UT. “I like the team a lot and I want to thank Tennessee for offering me.”

No relation to Justin Hunter as far as I can tell.

Pretty sure there is no relation to Justin.

This kid is going to be really, really good in a few years. He did just about everything last year as just a Freshman but is apparently being viewed as a safety in college. Surprised he isn't being projected as a LB considering he played his freshman year of HS ball at 210. He's going to be one of a handful of guys in his class from the area who will probably end up very highly ranked. I hope ZA plans on spending a lot of time in the area.

+1...kid's a monster for his age. Has scary good potential.

He might be a LB by 17, he could be 235 or 240 by then.

Tennessee is recruiting Hunter primarily as a wide receiver, so wide outs coach Zach Azzanni has taken the lead in the process for the Vols. But defensive backs coach Willie Martinez also talks with the class of 2017 star, and neither has told Hunter if they want him exclusively at one position if he were to commit. Azzanni has visited Hunter personally at Indian River High School and isn’t shy about his desire to snag one Virginia’s best upcoming players.
“I have a great relationship with him,” he said. "He just said you’re going to have to come down there. I feel that bond. It’s been great.”
Hunter, who confessed he wasn’t much aware of Tennessee’s rich history on the gridiron before his offer, has taken the time to learn about one of college football’s most storied programs.
“I didn’t know too much. I did a little bit of research on them,” Hunter said. “I talked to the coaches and they told me some of the things that happened around there. I’m just gaining more information every day.”
Without a plan to make a decision until his senior season, Hunter is weighing all options right now and mulling over every opportunity coming his way.
“(I’m looking for) just a place that feels like home to me, that I know for a fact that I can play there and just feel the bond with all the coaches that can take me to the next level,” he said. “That’s pretty much it.”

Devon Hunter has suffered quite a fall in the latest 247 rankings, dropping from the 40s to #115. Nonetheless, he remains a prospect with compelling versatility, size, and athletic ability. UT coaches visited in late January/early February this year and made it known that he is a priority. I would anticipate UT remaining among his top schools. I would also think that his upside is higher if he has the frame at 6'3 to add weight and move to LB or Star. Considering that Azzanni is recruiting him, however, perhaps I am wrong about where he projects at the college level.

Would probably go to Clemson right now if it were up to him. Not sure it is though.

From Rivals:

Any idea which schools will be in that cut and what places do you plan on checking out in the coming weeks and months?

Hunter:
“As of right now, I’m pretty sure that Clemson, UNC, Florida, Alabama and Virginia Tech are ones that will be making it. But I’ve still got to go visit other schools. I have no clue where I’ll be going to next. Most likely, I’ll go down to Florida. I know I’ll go back to Clemson and just don’t know the date yet. I need to go to Tennessee and Ohio State, too.”

"Devon Hunter, a 4-star safety out of Virginia, told me he wants to visit Tennessee and make it to campus. He said he has legitimate interest right now but just hasn't seen Tennessee up close."
