"Chandler seems to be a really good fit for Tennessee's offense given his speed and quickness. He can do several things out of the backfield with his ability to make that first cut and get up the field and he also has good hands which makes him a receiving threat as well.
"Even though he's not the biggest tailback, he's a tough runner and is durable given he's had to carry the ball a lot already in high school. He's got the attributes to be a No. 1 tailback at an SEC school and as he continues to get bigger that should only make him more valuable."
Its the opportunity and just staying close to home and just representing Tennessee as a whole and having the opportunity to stay in state, Chandler told Volquest.com this summer.
Chandler has put on 10 pounds this off-season and MBA head coach Marty Euverard has seen his senior tailback grow physically and blossom as a player during his first three seasons. "He's one of the best I've ever coached," Euverard said. "He's fast. He's physical. He has great vision and he's a team player. He's a better person than he is a player."
It definitely opens my eyes to things. It shows that UT is obviously doing something right. When I see other guys commit it makes me take a little bit deeper look at things, Chandler explained. I was up there with Maleik (Gray) when he committed and it was just eye-opening to see all these guys committing from the state and them really preaching the message of staying instate is something special and I think they are doing a good job of it.
Even though he's one of the most prolific ball carriers in the country, Euverard said he's just as good a teammate as he as an athlete. "He's very unselfish," Euverard said. "He blocks and he carries out fakes. He never complains about how much he gets the ball. He's a true leader. He brings the younger players water and that is the part that is so impressive."
I just feel like it's the best fit for me, staying close to home and being able to stay in the state I grew up playing in, having that opportunity, said Chandler, whos ranked by 247Sports as the nations No. 56 overall prospect and No. 5 running back in the 2017 class.
Chandler, whos the son of former Ole Miss running back Chico Chandler, said his decision came down to the Vols and Rebels in the end. He also considered Southern California, Ohio State, Duke, Florida, Georgia and Auburn.
It's been pretty recently, but Tennessee has kind of always been on my mind, he said. Tennessee and Ole Miss, I've been going back and forth between the two. But both those schools have pretty much been the main ones on my mind. (I like) the great coaches at Tennessee. I love the atmosphere up there.
He said he wanted to make his decision just before the season because his team has our first game coming up this week.
