'17' TN ATH Tee Higgins (Clemson commit)

OK, when you bring recruits, specifically Tee into the discussion, this goes towards a specific opinion I have on current state of affairs. You say that these kids gravitate towards the "flavor of the month", and I agree. Hindsight is 20/20, and I really really wish that UT had formulated a transition plan out of the Fulmer years (ie FSU from Bowden years) rather than what appeared to be a reactionary, seat of the pants non-plan. I was on the field before the Alabama game in 2008, and overheard some AD staff discussing the amount of Crimson in the stands, and that this was unacceptable, and a change had to be made.
My biggest issue currently with UT is that Butch just doesn't "feel" like a "Tennessee Man" to me. I've seen him too many times come across as disingenuous. An example would be asking his handler to sign a piece of memorabilia for a long time member of the athletic department, and Butch refusing, claiming not to have time. In contrast, the times I've interacted with Dabo, he's almost unbelievably nice. An example was during the "pizza party" playoff selection show, we bumped into Dabo as his handler was rushing him from the field up to the press box for a live interview on ESPN. Our 4 year old daughter asked him if he'd take a picture with her. His handler told him he was to be live on air in 3 minutes, his response "Honey I've got plenty of time for you!" and squated down and grinned from ear to ear for what is currently one of her favorite pictures. I think this is part of what makes him a great recruiter, the Mamas probably melt and trust him immediately.
On the "Flavor of the Month" angle, look at the past 5 years that these kids have been tuned in to who's hot. Clemson is 56-10 in the past 5 years, and 11-10 vs ranked opponents. Tennessee is 31-31, and 3-23 vs ranked opponents. Tennessee is improving, but it's a process, Clemson won ten or more games for 4 years before last year's run, and built through recruiting. The roster at UT points to this year being a possible year to make a run, but I don't know about the playoffs. I believe that they can get to Atlanta, and a win there should put them in(with <2 losses), but that's an awfully tall order. That will pay off with recruits over a couple of years, but this season's results are for the current Sophomores and Juniors, it takes building relationships.
A couple of things that I also hope work in Tennessee's favor, are the coaching changes at UGA and USCe. I believe that Kirby is an experiment and parting with Richt was a mistake, and as a Clemson fan, I couldn't have hand picked a better choice for the cocks, other than maybe Bama's Offensive Coordinator. Hopefully these two mistakes will clear the path a little bit for UT to be in Atlanta more often, and reap the benefits.
Lastly, and I know this was a long winded post, but College Football Ebbs and Flows. It's like a soap opera for us dudes, complete with rumors, scandals, and drama. I am enjoying the heck out of Clemson's current run, and the down years(3-8 in 98 while y'all were winning the National Championship) just make it sweeter. The down years suck, but I know we'll be there again, and I'll just outlast them again.

Would you care to elaborate on Butch not having time? I am not saying it did not happen, I would just like more details. Did he not sign to be spiteful or was he really pressed for time?

I agree about the "transition" with Fulmer. That was botched about as badly as it could be and we still have not recovered fully.

Personally, I was glad that Clemson got the "Clemsoning" monkey off their backs last year. I hate that you are having such a good recruiting year in our state, especially in one of the years that we do have a number of highly ranked players.

I think Georgia's move to get Kirby Smart was a panic move. It remains to be seen if it works out. They were afraid USCe was going to grab him and let a solid coach go to take a chance on a DC who has never coached at this level.

I would love to see Clemson in the playoff as it would almost definitely mean we won the conference and that would be an excellent outcome.

My final point is that I remember laughing out loud when Clemson hired Dabo. I thought that it was going to be disastrous. I believe that he is one of the five best coaches in the country, at this time, and whomever promoted him should be commended.

Really that's the argument you're going to make when have to go back 18 to find our most recent?

Dude, you're not helping your cause. We get it, you defend Clemson to try to make yourself look smart but you're also trying to ingnore the facts that Clemson does in fact, play against average competition at best in the ACC. To think they're just unbeatable due to their record, is beyond dumb. If that's the case then Tennessee should have lost to Northwestern in the Outback Bowl considering they were 10-2 and we were 8-4. Guess who had the harder schedule between those two? Tennessee. Scheduling DOES make an difference in a team's success.

Find the post where I said they're unbeatable. In fact, in your search you'll probably find several posts where I said they wouldn't run roughshod in the SEC. Surely you follow recruiting enough to see the difference in a NW and UT roster and how Clemson's roster fits in there. I'm not looking at records, I'm looking at talent accumulated in comparison to their opponents or hypothetical opponents.

I can't be specific about the incident because I'd rather not give clues as to who the request was for. It was during ladies camp, during a slow period, and the response was to offer the "fan request" email address. I wouldn't say spiteful, just dismissive, and not interested in being bothered. In my circle, we'd refer to it as "big leaguing", and it's in jest when we do it. This guy has John Ward, Johnny Majors, and Phil Fulmer in his cell phone, but Butch doesn't have time to sign a helmet(even Lane was capable of this).

I was very skeptical of the Dabo hire initially as well, but that experiment has paid off ten fold.

Do any of these threads have actual info anymore, or are they just forums for pissing contests?

This thread doesn't. It has become a Clemson circle jerk thread where 2 frat boy fans are taking a victory lap over landing a local kid out from under Tennessee's nose. Of course, they supposedly like the Vols as well. (Cough) bandwagon (cough)

Typical for this place. One suggests another team is a solid program and their fandom is questioned. It's unfortunate that you're so simple minded you can't bother yourself with other perspectives. Think I'll call UT real fast and cancel my tickets and while I'm at it get a refund on my trip to aTm; sanddune has proven my bandwagoness to me.

Yea well I'm sure Tennessee has the talented roster to compete and possibly beat Clemson but you probably think otherwise since you've been trying your hardest to defend them in this thread the whole time. I hope Tennessee beats the living hell out of Clemson one day just so you can't make an argument anymore about who's better.

It's tough for some to accept the notion there is quality football played outside of the SEC. Of course if Tennessee was in another conference, you can bet the consensus would be the SEC is overrated and a conference of cheaters.

Most of this board is Vol fans, not Clemson fans. Do you expect everyone on here to gush over Clemson just because they took Higgin's out of Butch's own backyard? Your trolling is really starting to become pathetic.

I'm as Vol as anyone. I'm just not a person who can't see other teams are big time as well. I'm not gushing over Clemson. Just pointing out they are a top quality program currently. Especially on the field.

Only thing simple is you repeating yourself in a circular argument about Clemson's greatness for over a week on a hometown kid's thread who spurned Tennessee for Clemson. So surely being such a self proclaimed advanced thinker, you could see why some would come to the conclusion that you have some secret love affair with Dabo. Probably rub one out to his poster before you go to bed at night based on what I've read on the last 10 or so pages. Giving your tickets away is probably a good idea. Don't want a guy in cargo shorts and a purple paw hat sitting in a seat where an actual Vol fan could reside.

Always cracks me up. Respectful after the fact makes bad behavior a ok.

You're are talking about an 18 year old kid who is getting his $$$ kissed by every person he meets. I can't imagine how I would have handled that amount of attention when I was his age. I'm sure I wouldn't have made some of the best decisions when it came to picking a college to play sports at.

I'm told there is a slight sense of relief on the hill now that Tee has made his choice. They pursued him fully, because he's a 5* in our back yard....but that the longer it dragged on the more he seemed to be more trouble than he was worth. I think he's a good kid, but somewhat entitled after all the attention. There was an increasing opinion he could end up being a Malone type project rather than an immediate superstar.

I do know this...he refused to play in the 7-on-7 tournament Friday at Maryville College. Big-time.

I hated hearing this....I was pulling for a flip back home. The kid seems to have unreal potential.

I thought I read Butch was there to watch him in that 7on7. Did he really not play?

He was there to watch his son, who is at Catholic. If he happened to see Tee....it was an accident. As I understand he couldn't watch any game but the Catholic game because of the family connection, or have contact with any players.

He did not play, and I'm told he actually refused. I did not see that personally.

Last year's Clemson team was better than last year's UT team. That was the only topic being discussed. Not future. I hope we beat the hell out of them too. I attended Clemson for 1 year of grad school; the year Dabo was promoted to interim HC and the arrogance of Clemson fans turned me off to their program immensely. So believe it or not, I have no use for Clemson. However, that doesn't diminish my thinking that last year's Clemson team was easily one of the top 5 in the country.
