The best in the state. It's a broad statement, but a large portion were in attendance for Tennessee's first Junior Day last Saturday. Some weren't able to make it due to other obligations and while that could have been the case for Oak Ridge standout Tee Higgins, he didn't let a district basketball game stand in his way. He spent roughly four hours on campus and said he appreciates that Tennessee's staff still makes him a big priority.
"They recruited me the same way they always have," Higgins said. "It was nice to have all the in-state guys there and they want all of us to stay in-state and play at Tennessee. The Tennessee staff treats you like family and they really are like father figures. They make it feel like family when you are there."
Higgins had been committed to Butch Jones and the Vols for several months before opening up his recruitment earlier this month. It was a calculated decision to give himself the best opportunity in both basketball and football. Make no mistake, that Higgins still has a great fondness for Rocky Top, but also wanted to be true to himself and Tennessee.
"Growing up they have always been my favorite team," Higgins said. "I wanted to play there since I was younger. The recruiting process came along and I had to get used to it. I think I committed way too early. I just opened up things back up and it's actually taken pressure off of me. (Other) Coaches were still talking to me and I didn't want to be a liar and so I opened it back up."
The chance to play both sports that he excels at will be a big factor in his decision. After all, he won Mr. Football last Fall and is a candidate for Mr. Basketball currently. But when he and his family sit down to make a final choice at some point in the next year, he'll do so with the thought that playing time won't be a factor.
"I want to major in communications," Higgins said. "My education and my major will play a role. Playing time doesn't matter to me because I know I'm going to have to come in and earn the spot no matter where I go."
