Like I've said before I watched the film on Bituli and that was my assessment. I also watched a scrimmage vs Pearl Cohn in which they have very little defensive talent but he flat out butch slapped them on both sides of the ball. I still say he palys very weak competiton but really impressed me vs PC.
Now on to Gray, I have NO personal vendetta against this kid. I talk to coaches and take their opinion and compare it to mine. The kid is a phenomenal looking athlete I just don't see him as a top 100 talent. He's not better than Bituli, Tyrell, or Hart as a LB, at S he's not better than Okeke or Joejuan instate or Nigel Warrior nationally. The coach I spoke with was from a top 10 school in the NCAA and says the kid is a hype machine and after the Smyrna game he saw all he needed to see to know his ranking and talent are not equal.

Thanks for the insight and opinion here. I still think there is a long way to go in his development and hope that he can reach his full potential.

Obviously, he was just on UT's campus and has an offer from us. Do the UT coaches have the same opinion of the other NCAA coach you spoke with?

We can't unless we do...then we'll pick somebody else. The days of our recruiting class being ruint over not getting ONE PLAYER are over.

That may be so but what would our defense look like right now if we had Jalen Ramsey or Vonn Bell. Not saying he is even close to those types of players...yet, but we need to lock up the best of the best in state each year especially when they are all star talent.

Against Smyrna he had 3 TFL 1 sack 1 int and 1ff. And Smyrna literally runs 75% of their plays to the boundary which is away from where Gray plays. I'm not saying the kid doesn't make mistakes and doesn't need to improve but from my stand point it seems like you have something against him. Is Maliek a NPA kid?

I have nothing against a kid at all. He was a NPA kid and is no longer. I quote a coach from a top 10 school gave the above comments. When he was ranked he was a NPA kid and I felt the same way. Kid looks nice but as I said and will maintain he is not top 50 in America at any position. No personal vendettas here at all my friend. Seems if anything you're biased and not objective to criticism of the kid. I give what coaches and myself speak based on assessments and different perspectives.

Do not understand why Gray is not played on offense or returning kicks. very explosive in open field. Lavergne lacks in the wr category so why not put him in there every now and then and run a sweep or toss it up to him not many guys are gonna go up and win against him. His athleticism needs to be used.

I understand you are defending your assessment. However, to say that the other poster is biased from his comment is a little premature. Are you seeing the other side of the argument? I'm not implying that the recruiting services always get the rankings of players correct. We all know they don't always get them right (e.g., Dontanvius Blair, Malcolm Brown, etc.). However, to be ranked as high as he currently is, don't you think someone who knows a little bit about football and analyzes these kids' performances saw something they liked that warranted a higher ranking? You're quoting one coach; however, there are apparently many coaches at prominent programs (e.g., Alabama, FSU, UT, Auburn, USC, etc.) that believe he is worth a scholarship offer.

I welcome any criticism of the kid. He has a lot of things he needs to work on to be a complete player. I have no dog in this fight so I feel I'm objective. But you come on here and say the kid is a hype machine and that he got all his offers from his performance in 8th grade. Yet he has a superb offer list and gets invited to the rivals 5 star challenge. Now you say he use to be a NPA kid but isn't anymore. Seems to me that may be why dont like the kid. Is Jacoby Stevens a NPA kid?

There's a lot of room between top 50 and garbage. I think Conley is fitting him somewhere in between.

I watched him tonight against a horrible Antioch team. Honestly forgot he was on the field. I don't know if it was because Antioch is so terrible that he didn't really try and the coach felt he wasn't needed or he's just not that good. He didn't play offense at all. He did make one good tackle where he tracked a kid down. He moves well for a LB. I just expected him to dominate considering the kids he played against probably won't be playing at the next level. But it was just one game and I'm no scout so TIFWIW

Coach let me help you and others out. I deal with the likes of Woody to Barton. These guys are super biased and guessers all day. Good guys but seriously rankings are about relationship and sometimes money. Moreso in basketball than football but it happens especially for certain positions. I've criticized NPA kids too ie. Oliver and Smith. No bias here at all. Last trust me we get used quite a bit kids get offers and lv us because that was their motives all along. Its business for us as well as the other participaring parties.

Glad you said it because once again I was called for the 2nd wk in a row saying are they serious about this kid being top 50 in America and he made no impact on the gm tonight against us. Scout coach he never showed up tonight I was at the game and the kid was a ghost, lollllll. I don't make this up guys nor would I want to damage my credibility or my company name with childish behavior of demeaning a kid.

De1 just keep doing your thing.I value your opinion on kids you have seen with your own eyes.Recruiting by stars gets you in trouble.Ask Bobby Bowden and Coach Fulmer later in his career.Your eyes don't lie.

Coach, your not helping me out. I know how the recruiting game works. I understand that it's more about money than anything. I've never once said the kid is a top 50 or 100 or 250 player. My whole arguement this whole time has been that you get on here and say the kid is a hype machine and got all his hype from when he was in 8th grade. Now, maybe you can help me with this. If he was a hype machine and isn't a top 50 or 100 or 250 player then why does he have a choice to go to any school in the country he wants? You make it out like he is a 2 star talent. Maybe you do talk to coaches who say they don't like his game. That's cool. I believe it. But for every 1 coach that doesn't like his game 5 more do. Now, I'm no genius but if he can go to just about any school in the country he must be a pretty damn good player. I couldn't care any less about recruiting services. His offers speak for themselves.

P.S.- He did have an awful game last night. Out of position all night and missed some tackles. For everyone wondering why he isn't playing offense I heard it's because he has had a high ankle sprain since the PC scrimmage and he is more important to them defensively than offensively.

Lets get this straight offers absolutely do not equate to he can go anywhere he wants. Ask me how I know of the hype machine and 8th grade ratings and I'll explain. Just know Josh and Emmanuel Smith were unheard of until NPA. Jalen Ramsey only played 1 true season of football and was top in America, hmmmmmmmmmm just a coincidence NPA kid. My man it all came thru NPA exposure. Middle school combine. We had Ugo and Keyshawn last yr multiple offers for 1 kid they could pk and chose the other not so. Offers mean nothing to a lot of kids, they're just what they are offers and that doesn't mean a kid can or could commit. I only stated he wasn't top 50 or 100 at this point. Like I said we've had the #1player in TN and went to The Open almost yearly. I can see top 50 and 100 and call it. No fan hype or offer list needed for me Coach. This is my final reply

Was going to post this right after game, but slipped my mind till I saw the thread.

Stood right next to him and JoeJuan Williams & friends during Vol Walk. We were first row, both were clapping while getting really into the whole experience and yelling Rocky Top. They hugged many of the players that came by.

Those both seemed to be as Vol as it gets.
