'17 MS RB Cam Akers (FSU commit 12/27)

We have 11 All-SEC players and 6 Preseason All Americans per Athlon. LSU and Alabama have slightly more I think. Now go compare the high school recruiting rankings of ours to theirs and I bet ours were on average lower. And think of all those UGA 4 and 5 stars that aren't on those lists.

Our staff recruits AND develops, which most of the SEC doesn't do.

That was my guess.
We're predicted to be in the thick of everything while having a lower star ranking.
The staff will miss from time to time but they seem to have a knack for envisioning beyond who espn bloggers demand they look to.

Not bashing the staff but I believe the abundance of early playing time has something to do with player development. Schools such as LSU and Alabama tend to have a quicker turnover of starters than we have had in recent years.

I'll never bet against our staff knowing more than the VN faithful. But they have shown a tendency over the past few years to take guys early who don't pan out later.

They start recruiting these kids shortly after puberty in some cases. They monitor physical and skills development over time, and if it looks like good things will happen, they take a risk. Sometimes that proves correct, sometimes not. We tend to be most aware of the 3 star projects that don't work out, but there have also been several 4 stars that didn't either. On the flip side, they have pulled a number of lower ranked players that have proven to be absolute gems. The only real measurement of recruiting quality is success on the field, and you have like to the trajectory so far.

After hearing our coaches are pressing harder for 3 stars Ross and Locklear than 4 starTJ Moore? They either KNOW more than us or think they do. Wouldn't bet against it. :)

Dooley thought he knew more than VN and the recruiting services. Just sayin', Every school has 3 stars for a base and depth, can't JUST have 3 stars tho

On a related note, if they are talented enough to play in the SEC, you take them if they want to come and work out numbers later unless you are sure someone better IS coming. That said, looks like Ga might be out of the Akers sweepstakes. Looks like they will have a couple RB commits on their list in the next month, not sure if Ga has room for 3.

Big difference? Dooley never rated a 3 star HIGHER than a 4 star through talent evaluation. Took what he could get. :) And Butch has pulled in a significant number of 4 stars in his time here...I don't see the trend going towards "relying on JUST 3 stars". :hi:

Agreed, and I was referring more to those that are not wanting the Fla RB. Might be a 3 star but I think he is top 10 APB. Has plenty of speed.

I've noticed in Aker's film, he looks slow at times even though he's considered like the 2nd overall RB in the country but Chandler looks faster to me.

Maybe Cam plays against faster competition and thus looks slower by comparison. Just a theory. Probably wrong.

Oscar Meyer looks like he's trying to sign a class with few to no 3*. As of now they are at 3 5*, 10 4*, and just 1 3*

How can you watch Colemans highlights and say he doesn't have athleticism for this level? Crazy. Kid is a really good fit for our offense and underrated.

Just my opinion. I love colemans patience and vision. He seems upper tier in that conversation, but he does not outrun people on his highlights and is not overly physical at the point of contact. Akers looks like a can't miss prospect from an athletic standpoint

Coleman seems to be very good in all aspects except his top end speed jmo

If those highlights are of him at QB, that could explain it easily. Takes a while to get a head of steam if you're not taking handoffs.

The one 3 Star is a scholarship Kicker.

But I don't see how he loads an entire 25 man class with all 4's & 5's...

You're right. I've been looking back through their recruiting and discovered that it 2015 Urban signed 10 3*'s and one 2*. They signed a good many 3*'s last year too.

2014 and 2015 Bama signed 8 3*'so and two that weren't even ranked. That's not counting the unranked kicker that they signed in 2014.

Your "facts" are only confusing the situation. How can we properly freak out if you keep bringing this calming influence? So inconsiderate.

This got me to thinking.
Osu 3*s (enrollees starting 2013 through current commits)
3,6,10,5,0
Bammer 3*s (enrollees starting 2013 through current commits)
7,3,4,6,1

I left off specialists (K,P,LS) schollies. 2 of the 3* on osu have left the team and I expect a couple from 2015 will leave after this season. Not sure about bammers.

Both schools as far as I can tell have been getting solid contributions from several of those guys (good evaluations I suppose).

Here's my unsolicited opinion on who's better between Akers/Chandler:

While I view Akers and Chandler as elite, I am inclined to view Chandler as the better of the two. I think the difference in the two players' ranking reflects the preference the recruiting sites give to prospects who camp. Akers is a camp warrior. Chandler doesn't seem to camp for whatever reason (or, at least, not as much). Not surprisingly, Rivals appears to be the site with the biggest ranking discrepancy between the two prospects.

I think it's clear that we lead for Chandler. Akers is planning to EE so perhaps a silent commit from Chandler will remain silent until after the EE deadline. With Akers having a strong bond with CRG, the strength of our offense being the running game, a possibility of Hurd gaining Heisman consideration, and a high probability we lose both of our primary, highly touted RBs this season, I think Akers is more in play than most VNers seem to believe. He's not likely going to Ole Miss and UT isn't much further away than LSU. I also think once he sees how good Weber looks at OSU this season, the Buckeyes will fall from the top of his list, leaving him choosing between UT, LSU, and UGA (he may have already cooled on UGA, according to some). LSU's pitch to Akers will be identical to ours (strong running game, losing a Heisman candidate/front runner at RB, immediate playing time available), so I think they may become our toughest competition.

I think we could get both Chandler and Akers if we play our cards right. I don't think we have to in order to have a strong running attack in 2017 and beyond, but, as VNers like to say, "I'd allow it", ha!
