'17 MS RB Cam Akers (FSU commit 12/27)

I don't think Coleman is anywhere near Akers. It shows in the film, it shows in the offers and it shows in the rankings. I am still shocked we allowed Coleman to commit this early but that tells you a lot about how desperate the staff must be at this point.

Coleman is no Akers but your underestimating how good Coleman is. He prob gets bumped to 4 star by seasons end. He was a favorite of multiple analysts from our 8 commit haul recently. Fortenberry, Barton Simmons and Steve Witfog all felt he was a steal and underrated at this point. Kid has great vision and ability to make first guy miss which is great fit for this offense.

Staff is being realistic that you probably don't get both Chandler and Akers. But if somehow you do we can certainly use 3 RBs in this class due to Youngs career ending injury

What kind of competition has this kid faced in Mississippi? It's not a state, generally, with a lot of top-level teams. A long time ago we signed a top RB prospect out of Mississippi who was a total bust. Not suggesting this kid will be, at all--but wonder about the comp.

While I don't know about the level of competition Clinton HS faces, Mississippi is undeniably a talent-rich state (4th in NFL players per capita, 7th in FBS signees per capita).

Coleman's tape looks better. Akers simply doesn't look as explosive on tape as he's timed at camps.

However, none of these backs (Coleman/Akers/Chandler) is elite.

We might have to wait until 2018 to find a true successor to Hurd and Kamara.

I've liked Coleman from the start. I think Akers and Chandler are good too though.

I would be very surprised if Kelly isn't the starter next season. After him though all we'll have is CFA and Freshman as the back up. We need a Good RB or two in this class.

Regarding Coleman, and even Akers, for that matter, Gillespie has given me 0 reasons to doubt his RB evaluations

Not trying to be snarky, but which of his evaluations have proven out? I agree with you on Coleman and Akers, just curious where the Gillespie evaluation comment came from.

I've been happy with the recruitment and development with all of our backs since Gillespie arrived. I think he's one of the highlights of our staff.

While it isn't so much as his RB evaluations, his development has been great. Hurd is on the Maxwell watch list and Kamara has been a stud. Now obviously those are two highly rated and talented backs so it's hard to say what he is responsible for, but even Kelly has had some nice flashes when he's gotten touches.

Young looked like a worthwhile investment too...before the injury.

Actually looking at the two, I like Chandler more. But just slightly. I think Akers is legit though. Also, Coleman is so hugely underrated imo. Easily should be a 4 star. I hope we actually hold onto him.
