Not necessarily. Most of the fast 40 times have as much to do with the start as they do speed. My guess is his 40 times will get faster once he gets to college and is trained on how to actually run a 40 properly.

Just to play the Devils advocate, is he not already at a HS that provides college level training? I'm not really a big numbers guy either but 5+ seconds really catches the eye.

I'm sure a lot of schools train their guys to run 40's, but to what extent, I really don't know. Doing a 40 yard sprint....from a sprinters position isn't a real football move, so how much they are trained to do it, I couldn't tell you.

I'm personally not concerned with it....yet at least.....as his shuttle time shows that he has quickness and agility. At worst right now.....you don't put him in on passing downs, where he might have to chase someone down...lol.

I think this is his first year there. His junior year highlights are from a school in Colorado

Let's hope not

Nobody knows what Bates is. He had a bad injury right off the bat. He is a question mark, but he is still a talented question mark. If he was truly "bust all the way" it looks like he would be in danger of being..ahem..processed. I've heard no rumblings of such, just that he was behind.

I liken the 40 yard sprint vs football speed to this. Using me as the example.

Football speed.........I'm a 51 year old white man speed.

40 yd dash speed.........I'm in the forest. My friend is 25 yds ahead of me. A bear comes out of the trees 50 yds behind me and starts chasing us. The car is 200 yds away and I know there is no way in hell I can get there before the bear gets me speed.

Or what I like to call the I have about 10 seconds to make up that 25 yd difference between me and my friend and pass him, putting him between me and the bear speed. :)

Bates is going to be a redshirt sophomore. Let's disregard his injury, weight gain/loss, and position switch.

We run a base 4-3 scheme and often drop back into a two-LB nickel formation.

Prior to this fall, he's had to compete with JRM and Weatherd (both upper class men) at the OLB position, as well as with the other freshmen (McDowell, Kirkland, and Sapp).

But yeah, bust...

Remind me not to go camping with you, "friend"! ;-)

Weighed in at 6-2, 222 at The Opening Charlotte last Sunday. Recorded a 5.03 40, 4.23 shuttle (same time as Tee Higgins), 32.0' powerball toss, and a 27.0" vertical.

Those are not SEC caliber numbers. Some of the guys we're after in the 2017 class are really lacking in athleticism.

Ummm if I'm not mistaken the best thing about his dad was not his raw talent or numbers but he had a huge heart. So big he was a great NFL player as well. Hope the apple didn't roll too far.

I'm curious how the linebacker position plays out. I really like this guy and Wooten too. I like Foster as well. The one guy out of Georgia who can fly we have to keep him. I can see any of those other three taking the other two guys spots. One reason I like Santino is because he plays at IMG, it would be nice to get some end roads in there.

Edit: Bembry is the one I really like. He has a different gear.

Trust our coaching staff.

Bates is not done as a player until/if he takes a medical. He is outstanding at pass coverage/defense. IMO that is where they will work him into the system when healthy.

Coming from the guy who said Quarte Sapp and Cortez McDowell would be bench warmers during their careers at UT. Yeah....They're gonna be really solid contributors this fall. No one takes your garbage seriously.

My guess is we get this guy with one motive being to attempt a pipeline at IMG.

Something is wrong with the numbers from this camp. Tee Higgin's 4.7+ should tell you all you need to know.

We don't need another slow LB coming into the system, thought we learned to get away from that... hope those numbers are wrong.... surely we can do better..... getting tired of all the media hype around all these instate stars that are looking elsewhere.... by summer we need some higher profile players to commit.. Until Bates actually puts together a couple of actual good game performances, he is getting closer to a huge whiff....I know he has been hurt for two years, but that has to tell you something right there... name another SEC program that has top tier guys staying out/hurt for more than an entire season, much less two... hope he heals and proves me wrong but at this point, not seeing him as a starter while here.

While Marchiol's 40 time in Charlotte was unimpressive, his 4.23 shuttle time ranks 4th nationally among the 2,000+ Opening participants weighing 220+.
