'16 TX CB Bailey Phillips (Former UT commit 6/9/15)

JMO, I just don't see SEC defensive back in this kid. I'll trust the coaches, for sure. I just don't see the talent that we need. Nothing jumped out in his film.

Getting back on target, I agree here. He showed good instincts but he's not exactly burner and has a small frame to work with. I'd be surprised if he wasn't already considered a blueshirt prospect.

Also 247 lists him as 5'7. Not sure how accurate that is, as Rivals has him @ 5'8. Did not realize he was that small...smaller than Inky for sure.

Who was the DB that committed but the coaches didn't except it. It was last year sometime. He was from Georgia and OV was big on him. I think he was turned down because of size.

That's what gets me. We are trending towards recruiting taller & faster DBs like the Canadian kid from VA, I forget his name (Rene maybe?), he's like 6'1 200lbs looks like a really solid DB - perfect size to boot. My guess is Phillips accepted a blue shirt scholarship. Don't see him being an official signee for the '16 class.

My take on Justin Coleman is this.

Freshman year he showed some promise despite having the typical freshman moments.

Sophomore year he struggled mightily, but that was the Sunseri year, and everyone struggled mightily. In the secondary in particular it became painfully obvious as the season wore on that NO ONE understood their assignments on a consistent basis.

Junior year, learning his 3rd defense in 3 years under his 3rd D.C., he again struggled.

Senior year, finally able to get comfortable in a system, he responded by developing some consistency and becoming a pretty dependable player for the most part.

I'll say this about him, we were better in 2014 with him than we would have been without him, and in the end, I think that's a nice compliment for any player.
Probably the most accurate assessment. Coleman improved a lot this year, he still has a lot to improve on when the ball is in the air but I thought he was a lot better. Even if he gets drafted he was probably the biggest weak point on the defense this year. That's not slamming the kid that's being honest. I'm happy for him if he gets drafted though.

#Vols getting a good one in CB Bailey Phillips (@BaileyPhillips_). Don't let size fool you. He is a major competitor.

Didn't Coleman move from cb to nickleback? Maybe thats why he wasn't exposed as much.

Didnt think he ever had size or speed for the SEC but i could be wrong.Best of luck to him though

These early commits seem to be the ones that don't hold up. Good luck to Bailey and I hope he finds a school that fits him well.

We are really on class #3 with Butch, and his strategy is quite clear. You take guys early who you would be fine with taking. Then, when guys higher up the board at similar positions either show real interest or give a silent verbal, they cut the early commit. You just keep adding better and better players as the time closes in on Signing Day. Has happened every single year.

People can complain about that strategy, but it ensures that you get good players. This is big time college athletics, and the kids can change their minds, too. Butch knows what he is doing.
