“First off, I would like to thank God for the kicking abilities that he has given me. None of this would have been possible without Him. I would also like to thank my family, coaches and friends. Over the past few weeks it looked as if I might not be able to continue my football career in college. However, I was lucky enough to be recruited once again by my dream school. I feel extremely blessed to announce that I will be continuing my education and football career at the University of Tennessee!”

Nickle had reported preferred walk-on offers at Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Middle Tennessee State, Oklahoma State and Toledo.

Nickle is rated as the nation's 9th best punter according to the Kohls Kicking rankings.

He originally committed to the Hokies on April 11th but did not enroll in the University over the summer as a member of the 2016 class.

From Oak Ridge.

IMO...this is how all specialist spots should be handled...I might get roasted but I just don't see the value of giving a spot in a signing class to a kicker/punter/snapper...there are plenty of good ones out there who will walk on and earn an open scholly

I don't believe you can do that any longer, especially if you want to be good on special teams. They learned the hard way with the long snapper that was coming as a walk-on and left when OU offered a scholarship. You certainly have to sign a scholarship kicker most of the time. Not going to roast you for that opinion, but I think you have to offer them now.

I think all 3 spots are worthy of a scholarship. I wouldn't keep 3 kickers or 3 punters on scholarship at a time, but I'd have one of each at all times. The class before my scholarship kickers SR year I'm taking another one so I've got one with a year in the program ready to go. Now if there is an injury outside that window of time, I'm going with the walkon as I'd have at least one of each of those as well. Long snapper, same thing. One on scholarship and at least one walkon unless I have a guy(maybe a TE who has experience doing it) who could step in if there is need.

Maybe you should go ask Bobby Bowden what "Wide Right" means...

Don't care about punters, kickers, long snappers? Yet, there are numerous complaints when kickers miss, punters muff and LS make bad snaps resulting in loss of yards, points and yes in UT's case since I have been watching (1979) games lost.

It takes ALL to make champions.......I personally think long snappers, punters and kickers are VITAL to wins and losses.

As many games as we've lost the last few years due to poor kicking, you all want to leave it all to walk-ons? Ridiculous...

Medley is the scholarship guy & Daniel was the walk on. Who performed the best last season? Case closed for special teams on kicking.

I wished Daniel could be our PK to be honest. Hopefully Medley has gotten the demons away from him that followed him around last season because he certainly cost us a couple of games at least.

If it were that simple, why would it be rare to have someone handle both duties. Kicking and punting are two different things. If Medley was replaced by a walk on you'd have an argument. We do have walk on kickers, and Medley has beaten them out for the starting position.

I was being sarcastic. Medley is our kicker. One that's on scholarship. Daniel was a walk-on now on scholarship. Daniel played better than Medley as a walk-on compared to a scholarship player.

I do understand they are two different positions in punting & PK. I believe Daniel could do it though & I'm not being sarcastic about that.

I have a family member that will be walking on to punt too. He's not a prefered walk on, but he played at a naia last year and did really well as a freshman. We'll see...
