Jeremy Lewis, Lone Grove, Running Back

Jeremy Lewis - Hudl

We've been reporting that Tennessee has been looking for a running back replacement for Joe Young in the class of 2016 and we can confirm that Oklahoma running back Jeremy Lewis (6-1, 190) has been added to the roster and enrolled in school this month and will practice in August when fall camp opens.

Lewis became a late qualifier as academics limited his options on signing day but he ran for over 3,000 yards his senior season and signed with Trinity Valley Community College in February.

This doesn't change the outlook at the 2017 running back board as Cam Akers and Ty Chandler remain the Vols' biggest priorities in a year where they must sign ready to play running backs.

But, Lewis should add some depth and another option once Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara leave after this season in all likelihood.

If he was a qualifier in February he would have signed with a Power 5 school for sure. Not sure about Nebraska's running back situation, but he no doubt would have signed some where.

He is on campus now taking classes. Apparently started a few weeks ago.

Boom!! 15-0. Sounds like a solid pick up to help the RB depth.

There's always a running back at some of the smaller schools or Division II that seem to be out of place in that you often say "how did that guy get overlooked". Maybe he's that guy.

Good luck and welcome to Tennessee Jeremy!

This may be a silly question, but did anyone from VQ confirm that he will be on scholarship? Didn't know if he was a PWO, or technically a blueshirt, or just a straight up scholarship. TIA.

You like his potential?

I do. I think he's a good player and considering the situation, needing a late add with Young out and only four tailbacks on the roster this fall and two next spring without him, it's a nice add.

I think if he sticks over the next few years he can be someone that helps. I don't know that he's a star, but I think he's a power 5 guy.

RB depth was needed. Fils-Aime, Lewis and Kelly will all be going after the starting RB position in 2017. Adding players like Chandler and maybe Akers will make that interesting.

In the end I wouldn't be surprised to see us get Akers and have him and Kelly split reps at RB. Also I wouldn't count out Hurd or (more likely) Kamara hanging around for next year.

Just watched his film. Looks to have a good sized frame, but runs straight up. Doesn't wow you with speed, but he is very agile for his size. Can probably add good weight in our strength program, and hopefully a little speed, and grow into an option for us in power situations, much needed depth at RB, and as a special teams player. Solid pick up and I would expect him to be a contributor.

I very much believe if one of those two were to hang around for one more year, it would be Hurd.

I agree. Given Kamara's skill set, I'm not sure a year as the feature back on campus really helps his stock. And your body can only take so many hits.

Hurd is different in that actually running the ball is probably the least nfl-ready aspect of his game. He's fast, but not breakaway fast. In contrast, he's a phenomenal blocker and has good hands out of the backfield, and he has the strength to push through tackles. I doubt he stays but I can at least see the reasoning as to why he would.

Unless Hurd is injured, IDT he'll even consider staying.

This. But enough about Hurd.

I'm psyched to get this guy. It is always good to have quality depth, especially at running back. I wonder how much TN playing Oklahoma helped him make his decision. Despite how that game went, Neyland was rocking as much as I've ever seen it.
