'16 NJ QB Jarrett Guarantano (Vols commit 4/15/2015)

So, NFL scouts have an incredibly difficult time evaluating college quarterbacks in terms of future production. So, why are we arguing about our evals about high schools QBs?

It's definitely fun to break it down but I feel like some people are getting salty about it.

Kendall is also the #3 QB and #27 overall player on Rivals, while Guarantano is #4 DT QB and #91 overall. So the sites have differing opinions.

Both seem to have strong arms. AK put up big stats last year, while JG's weren't as impressive. JG is a better runner than AK. Although AK has good scrambling ability and can pick up yards, I don't remember seeing him breaking away for too many long runs. So, JG looks to be the faster of the 2. JG is bigger, so that's a plus. Both look to have strong arms. AK has an odd release, but he throws a great ball. From what i've seen, it also looks like JG played much stronger competition than AK. But, I'm only basing that off things i've read online.

It hurt losing AK, but JG seems to be the real deal. Most seem to think he fits our offense better and is likely an upgrade. He is trending our way and is supposed to visit next week I believe. Hopefully he'll commit then.
It seems the coaches feel that way. I think we would've taken JG regardless if Kendall was still committed or not. That seems to be the guy the coaches have 1A on our board currently.

As far as competition goes it's not even close.. New Jersey prep ball is the real deal. AK film reminds me of QDs, big time arms on talented kids facing what looks like middle school all star teams. Also from what has been said JGs team mates hung him out to dry on many occasions. Not saying these are reasons I prefer JG to AK, but I think that JG would adjust quicker due to the talent he faces year in and out.

to be fair, it's a lot harder to evaluate NFL success than college success

Lmfao!! OK Brother!! Guess we can agree to disagree. Do admire the effort!I hope like hell Dobbs becomes one of the best QB's in the country this yr. He just has a long way to go. And if you are putting your eggs in the Alabama game basket then you didn't watch Ala play much last yr. I will refer you to passing yards they gave up to W.VA, Auburn, Ohio St and even Mauk torched that secondary a good bit. That was not a typical Saban secondary, they were statistically worse than our secondary. But to this point I don't have the confidence that he can play well and beat the more elite teams on our schedule.Beating UK, a very bad SCe defense and almost losing to a horrid Vandy team hasn't instilled that yet. And most Vol fans I know feel the same. But we all see the potential to lead us to great things, but until he does do it I will have that lack on confidence. He can change that quick this yr by beating OU and finally beating UF.
Your opinion is your opinion. The rest of us can see Dobbs is a star.

Agreed. Seeing comments that so and so is better than the other and is our future at QB is purely for fun and a guess. And no QB we currently have is a guarantee superstar or guaranteed bust.

I never said he wasn't going to be a star. He has shown signs of being a star in the making and other times like a middle of the conference QB. I like Dobbs a lot and hope Debord can develop his full potential. But until he becomes a more consistent passer he won't be a superstar. He hasn't been consistent so far. Even watching a replay of the SCe game he did very little passing the first 3+ qtrs. He was right at 54% but the last 10 mins we saw signs of being an elite passer. I was not sold on Bajakian as a good QB developer, hoping an OC with the experience Debord has can get him to the next level. Nothing I have said has been a knock on Dobbs, his potential is off the charts. But the majority of sensible Vol fans I know share that wait and see approach. I don't have full confidence in Dobbs like I had in Heath, Peyton, Tee and Casey. My confidence level in Dobbs is the highest it has been since Casey. But Dobbs does have his Since and Bray moments too. When he is good he is really good, but when he is bad he is a bad play waiting to happen. Dobbs improvement is the key to us competing for the East or fighting to get bowl eligible. And I want your honest opinion without wearing orange goggles. We knew with Casey that if we are down 6 with two mins to go and he got the ball then I had full confidence he would win the game against the better teams of our schedule. Do you have that type on confidence in Dobbs yet? He hasn't done it against a good team yet so for now my answer is no. He really only had one chance last yr to do that and couldn't against Mizzou. But he will get his chance early and often to gain Coach's and fans confidence this yr.

lol no question some hard asses will want to give you a hard time for talking about Dobbs' inconsistencies. Truth is he has a ways to go and the chance to get a lot of national attention this year IF he plays smart football and shows more consistency. He played lights out vs a very bad USCjr D and was throwing the ball with a nice touch and was very consistent vs a lesser talented Kentucky game. Vs Vandy he was average - almost cost us our bowl eligibility when he came out deflated in that game - also played worse than the stats indicated. He showed some flashes in the Missouri game, but again very limited because of our personnel / his consistency with the deep ball. Our inability to throw the ball to downfield targets really limited us late last year and the added pressure from an already-weakened line on top of a defense playing smart, disciplined football is what really made us lose to Missouri last yr.

If he gets his ish together on field - lookout - Rocket Dobbs could do BIG things next season.

Too bad Worley's eligibility ran out and Peterman didn't hang in there. Hope like hell one of the true freshmen can step up and win the job....hell, don't count Ashford out either....I think Ellis played QB in HighSchool. Either way, it shouldn't take much to beat out that loser Dobbs....he just can't get get his ish together and damn near cost us a chance to get to a bowl game last year.

I think we should double up on bashing the kid...just in case he isn't perfect every snap all season.

Definitely the way to go. I'm all in. Please do me a solid Butch and mention how "he can't hit the broad side of a barn" in one sentence, to be followed by how "he really can be great" a couple sentences down, would ya? You know, plausible deniability and whatnot. Thanks buddy.

I usually go with "can't complete anything past 10 yards" and "woefully inaccurate" but I see the need to reinvent. :)

Yeah, mix all that in....good stuff. I'm thinking about even making fun of how he runs...kinda clumsy, I think that's what I read once on here. Go after what some think is his strength....that'll get him. Maybe I can print some flyers....#AnybodyButDobbs

He's obviously not fast...play that up real big. If they insist on respecting him, issue lame panic eyebrows joke. #Relevant

These are my honest feelings about Dobbs..When you see him at his best..I feel like..WOW!..we are gonna kill everybody next year with just a little improvement in the OL play...When I go back and watch him at his worst...I think..wow..we are going to get killed by every good team next year...It's a very weird place I'm in. I believe the kid could end up being one of the greatest UT Qbs ever..or a flameout that sets the program back and gets Butch fired...that is just honesty. For the love of everything good and Orange in this world..Please let him become the legend..and not the goat.

Done! Gotta another angle, too...that damn major of his is taking up too much of his time, can't possibly get into the playbook what with them "space classes"... he ain't dedicated...probably why he can't read a defense quick enough...did you see that Missouri game??

Yeah, I'll do that. I bet he shaved them damn eyebrows to make his forehead look bigger, like Peyton's....poser!!

lol, well at least you aren't taking it too seriously. Some fans get overly defensive when you criticize Dobbs. Personally I think the criticism is warranted. I mean it's not like this is an imaginary problem.

A kid like Dobbs is always improving. He isn't going to stay status quo or digress. It's not in his blood/mentality. He is always working on something. The key to getting better is admitting your flaws and weaknesses and seeking to improve them. He does that. His progression each year in HS were very noticeable as was the progression from Fr to Soph yr of college. A heathy Dobbs is going to have a huge year
