For the Guarantano family, the attention started for Jarrett when he was in eighth grade. Karen still remembers getting mail for Jarrett to sign and return, and thinking it was a little out of whack.
Now when we get the phone calls, we tell Jarrett, Unless you really want to go to that school, or open another door, tell the coach thanks for calling, but my commitment is to Tennessee, Karen said.
The family learned to shut down their devices during dinner time, trying to preserve some peace. Eventually, they learned to just go with it.
It never became a problem for us, Karen said, because we said to Jarrett that if this is something that you want, if this is something on your bucket list, that you want to be No. 1 in the nation and you want to win a Heisman Trophy, this all comes with consequences.
