'16 NC SF Jalen Johnson (UT commit 10/11/15)

It has an impact. I remember reading about Cuonzo being told that he couldn't recruit a kid by an AAU coach that Cuonzo had an existing relationship with. Basically said "sorry man but you know I can't let this kid go to an adidas school"

Also, look where Pearl did his recruiting....

Tatum, Hall, Ware(signed and released from LOI), Trae all Atlanta Celtics(adidas). There's more that I am forgetting.

Also was leading for Jordan Adams and Damien Wilson who were Celtics as well IIRC.

It has an impact on who you can recruit and where you can build pipe lines.

Yep, that's the point I was making. Just interesting that in the first year of the Nike relationship, the first two commits are adidas kids.

I remember the Josh Selby recruitment as well. He was turned when he went to the Nike camp.

And yet, he signed with an adidas school, which I never understood.

Per usual, you miss the point.

Not at all, like I said above, does it happen, absolutely, but I believe it's overblown and isn't as big a deal as many (not saying you) portray it to be. Say we are talking about the kids ranked in the rivals 150, I would say maybe 10-15 are being pushed towards a school that is the same shoe company as their AAU team.

I would say that shoe companies have an influence on more than 10-15 kids per year. Maybe not always direct influence but influence none the less.

I think it's a much bigger deterrent being an adidas school than it is a positive to being a Nike school If that makes sense.

I don't know that Nike is really gonna help us land kids but I 100% believe that being an adidas school hurt us in recruiting basketball players.

Back on track here, Jalen is on 990 right now. Said Barnes being a HOF coach and distance to home were factors in choosing UT.

Wow what is going on lately? Lots of agreeing lately! Perhaps I am winning BTO over!

I thought there was supposed to be some sort of history of Adidas teams pushing kids to Adidas schools and likewise for Nike.

Yeah, a lot of people on this site talk about it, but I don't know if there's any validity to it. Bone and Johnson are either exceptions or there isn't validity to the idea. Either way, I don't know, and I don't care.

Jaylen Brown made a big deal out of it. Ended up going to Cal. No idea how common it is for bigger recruits.

Kansas can overcome being an adidas school.

Very true, and I agree, but that wasn't really the point with Selby's recruitment. The story supposedly was that Selby decommitted from Tennessee after attending a Nike camp and Nike people getting in his ear. If Nike truly was instrumental in his decommitment, it would seem reasonable that he would land at a Nike school.

I'm like you Chris I don't care what the reason is just as long as we have them both in camp & can play..That's all that matters right now..And whom can we get next to go with Bone & Johnson..All the shoe & outfit wear to me is not meaningful right now. Let's add some more bodies to what we have & got coming in.

Hey win or lose, it'd still be nice to be the finest looking team out there.

dude is a baller... how is he only a 3*? J.P. Prince 2.0.

Apparently, Johnson can run and jump, but doesn't have very well developed skills yet. That's why he's a three star. Eric Bossi said his rating was based on potential, not reality just yet. This is a kid we probably shouldn't expect production from until second year at best.

J.P. could handle and pass with the best of them, especially for 6-8. If he could have shot a lick, he'd be in the NBA right now.

Handle with the best of them??? Great passer, sure, but he was a pretty average (on his best day) ball-handler, and borderline terrible decision-maker when he took the notion to drive into the lane against 3 defenders. For a SF, his ball-handling was decent, but it is the main reason (combined with maybe the worst looking shot in the last ten years) that he never made it as a full-time PG.

I really enjoyed last year even though it was caught up in the Tyndall turmoil. Looking forward to watching each and every game, knowing Coach Barnes is a class act and the team is the best!

Really excited about this kid! It's awesome that he made it on ballislife. I'm willing to bet a lot that he'll be top 100this year before it's all said and done. Not only does he have hops and can play above the rim, he has that fire in his eyes.

Wow...great highlight reel. This kid has the ideal size and skill-set for the SF position. Good enough shooter to keep defenders honest, but quick and athletic enough to make some noise in the paint.
