'16 MS DE Jeffery Simmons

Ok, it says 270lbs at top of thread, but Rivals has him at 251 and 247 at 262. Regardless, isn't a 4.96 40 time slow? I know 40 times are not everything, but it usually does show explosiveness which at any position is important imo.(even DT if he projects as DT)

Seeing as D-linemen don't run 40 straight line yards, it isn't important. The important thing for linemen is their 10 yard split.

Shy Tuttle and Preston Williams say hi. Both were out of state 5 stars with no connections.

I get what you're saying but other than Alabama or Ohio State under Meyer, you don't see many 5 stars going far away from home. Most elite prospects go to the best school nearby.

Don't mean to bring this back up again, but your second paragraph is more what I was referring too. Not too many teams have a chance at top 50 kids from miss other than miss and miss st. Landing a kid like this would be huge IMO. Hope we do.

Tuttle was a 4*.

Swain was a BIG reason that Williams chose UT. Obviously Azzanni too. Williams had some sort of connection.

Full story to come but just spoke w/ Jeffery Simmons. He rated his UT visit very well and actually told me he wants to make it back to UT on an unofficial visit before he decides. Expects to be an NSD decision. Said he told the Vols coaches he would be back.

Hosted by Q Sapp. Wants to compete for PT right away. Says he isn't intimidated by competition.

Measured 6-4, 275.

Other schools in mix for OVs are: Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss & Miss. St but he has none scheduled at this time.

Even in Mississippi, Jeffery Simmons kept hearing all about the game-day atmosphere for University of Tennessee football.

Rather than simply continue to get second-hand information, the 6-foot-4, 275-pound Rivals.com four-star and top-five player nationally at the defensive end position opted to gather his own experiences.

"Just the game environment; they have a great game environment," the Macon, Miss., product said. "The people at Tennessee, especially when it comes to the recruitment process, I'm going to make my choice on the people I'm going to be around and I feel like Tennessee has some great people.

"People always say Tennessee is a great school and great game environment and I had a chance to see it myself and it's pretty good."

It was Simmons' first official visit anywhere, and he said Alabama, Auburn and the two in-state SEC schools --- Ole Miss and Mississippi State --- are among those vying for future official visits.

Even with that, however, the massive Simmons said he informed the Vols' coaches that he planned a return trip.

"Yes sir, I did tell Coach after I do take my other officials I want to come back and see (Tennessee again) before I finalize everything," said Simmons, adding he expects his choice to be a national signing day decision.

Hosted by injured Vols rookie Quarte' Sapp, Simmons said he fit in well with Sapp and other Tennessee players, including some defensive linemen such as Derek Barnett. He also praised the way Tennessee gave in-depth information on the visit and also noted the Vols' propensity to play freshmen; they're among the nation's leaders with 40 combined in the past two years.

"I feel like that they (the Vols) are up in the recruitment. Haven't made a top; have no favorites. There's a reason why I took this official, to see what they've got to offer," said Simmons, who will play in both the Alabama-Mississippi and U.S. Army All-American bowl games. "It helped a lot because Tennessee broke down a lot of things, especially during the tour. I feel like it's going to help a lot. …

"He (Sapp) did tell me that they don't show any favoritism so if you come in and work your butt off, you can play. You're going to be able to (get on) the field."

While Simmons, who indicated schools recruiting him like his size and burst off the edge, is seeking the right environment and people, he also isn't remotely intimidated by trying to immediately compete for playing time.

"Even though I'm probably going to have guys in front of me, I'm not scared of competition," he said. "So when I come in I'm just going to work my tail off and try to get on the field."

If he thinks the Gameday experience was good for s.carolina, he should have been here for some previous games. That crowd was OK, but NOTHING like the Oklahoma game..........and I know there are more things that he got to experience on Saturday besides just the crowd noise.

Is it just me, or did the Interview after the game sound very promising for our chances of landing him?

Robert Gillespie was in New Orleans and met up with D'Andre Christmas-Giles and saw Conny Durr as well as South Carolina commitment Lloyd Cushenberry. He could be an offensive lineman to remember depending on what happens at other spots. On Thursday he's expected to be in Mississippi to see Jeffery Simmons.

Looks like we're still in the picture here. Per 247:

It will be a signing day decision for four-star Army All-American Jeffery Simmons. The Macon (Miss.) Noxubee County isn't close to ending his recruitment though he has narrowed down his list.

As we approach January, Simmons is focused on five schools, with each of the five likely getting an official visit: Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee. Simmons includes Southern Miss among his favorites as well.

"I'd say Southern Miss is in the picture too," Simmons said. "I kind of like Southern Miss not just because my brother goes there too but they've got a nice program."

Among the five other favorites, Simmons has already taken an official visit to Tennessee.

"It was a great visit," he said. "I really enjoyed myself. It was a great atmosphere."

Simmons also was interested enough in Tennessee that he may not be done visiting Knoxville.

"I really enjoyed Tennessee. I want to get back up there in January and take an unofficial. I want to take another look at it. When I went up there I really enjoyed it."

Though Simmons is still letting the dust settle before he makes any decisions, there have been some coaching changes within his group of favorites. Don't expect that to impact his commitment though.

"I had a relationship more with Coach (Bo) Davis, the D-line coach (than Kirby Smart). To me that was the Nick Saban defense and Coach Smart ran it. Nothing changes."

Simmons had a similar sentiment in regards to Will Muschamp's departure.

"It was [Muschamp's] first year there. I was talking to Coach (Rodney) Garner."

Simmons continues to say the Vols are in the mix and that he could potentially return for an unofficial in January, but he's scheduled to see Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss and Mississippi State next month so we will see if he can squeeze in a Tennessee visit.
