'16 AL ATH Tadarryl Marshall (FORMER UT commit 4/28/15)

I said this last class and will say it again. This is clearly how Butch recruits. He takes some commitments early from guys he would love to have. However, he keeps recruiting and if anyone higher up the board commits or if guys open up recruiting because of coaching changes, then he will push the earlier guys to leave. It's simple, and it has resulted in top 10 classes. This is big boy football, and it is a rough business.

Yep. He's getting paid millions to make the program better at the end of the day, and if he has to play hard ball to improve the team so be it.

Yep. If he didn't do this, then we probably have Eric lauderdale over VP, no Kyle Phillips, no Josh Malone, no John Kelly, and Jarret Guarantano is an OU commit. It's a business.

If we'd missed out on a few of those guys and Butch lost one more game this season, he'd be on the hot seat right now instead of facing another pay raise.

Turning recruits down happens at ever big time school in college football. You should feel good that were having to tell recruits that there not going to be able to fit in. That means that we are getting really good talent. and Really good talent are interested. It's not a bad problem to have at all.

Butch is in a lose lose situation with some of this fan base. I think Butch has his faults, but he is a great recruiter and knows what he is doing.

From what I am hearing, this decision has nothing to do with another recruit.

Every kid who visits and makes a commitment is told that one thing, if not done, will revoke a scholarship offer. They must be on schedule to graduate high school. There are academic concerns with Marshall and that is why his offer was pulled.

This was not some backroom shady deal.

I assume the reality is that all offers are conditional up until signing day... Make the grades, continue to improve, stay out of trouble... Seems any of those would be reasons to revoke the offer. Kids can change their minds too, so its not a one way street.

The only way this kid has academic concerns is if someone wrote this for him. This isn't how someone who couldn't get into UT writes.

And if that's where he ends up then the academics excuse is out the window

Tyrone Sorrells says hi.

The academic snippet came from Scout's Danny Parker, but I had thought at one point Marshall was being considered for a commission to West Point

that doesn't fit the narrative for some people of reasons to not like Butch though. WTF

Maybe academics played a part but I doubt it was a major part. The major part was staff had question marks on where to play him and thought they can find better corner or WR instead of tossing him around back and forth never developing like we see too often sometimes with athletes

I'd say it's not a coincidence Velus Jones just visited then this happened

I couldn't agree more.. The report that academics were an issue seems like info fed thru proper channel for damage control.. I guess it is possible that the kid is smart and we'll spoken but does not apply himself.. Who knows?

Let me say that I am a lifelong Vol supporter even after 30 years in Alabama. I had a chance to interview TaDarryl and his family last week at his state championship game. This is a class family, and I can assure you grades are not an issue. They were excited about the opportunity to become part of the Tennessee family and TaDarryl was ready to do whatever it took to compete for playing time next fall. While I do understand the business side of recruiting and the perceived upgrade potential, let me say this young man will be a great asset to any program both with his ability and his character. We will regret not having the Marshall family as a part of our future.

Maybe....maybe not. There are a lot of good families across the country, and I'm sure we have plenty of them currently in our program. We can't include every player that comes from a good family in a recruiting class. Tough decisions have to be made. And at the end of the day, if people are going to 2nd guess, criticize, and suggest we fire a coach then we don't need to demonize him when he makes a decision some of us may feel uneasy about if he thinks it gives the university the best chance of winning.

I said just last night that we would cut ties with some current commits...but I specifically said Marshall was a take. Wonder if we told Henderson the same...

Butch throws me for a loop sometimes. This kid was a future starter in the slot. Nate Johnson looks like a real prospect too, but he's not Marshall imo.

I'll be happy if we land Johnson.

They were going to try Marshall out at DB, but he is a wr.

Oh well...

staff might know what he would project to and if they think DB, it's probably more accurate than your evaluation of him as a WR. Just sayin

You are right - unfortunately with Coach Richt getting fired and the Mad Hatter almost fired all coaches need to adopt this same strategy - it is the most competitive it has ever been and if you miss on one or two players it can cost you your job.

Everything I had learned about Marshall told me he was a slightly under-rated take. However, if he had come to Tennessee and he ended up transferring elsewhere 12 months from now, perhaps this is for the best.

Maybe it is just me, but I prefer offering a scholarship to players I know I want. And once they are here, I prefer they stay for four years.
