While I've seen nothing online about our having interest in Hicks at this point, he seems like Tyndall's type of player if we have room for another versatile 6-6 guy.

Hicks was named All-West Tennessee 1st Team by the Jackson Sun after averaging 23.6 points, 8 rebounds & 3 blocks per game last year. He was also named MVP of the Div. 1 AA state tournament after leading South Side to the state championship, averaging 21.3 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 assists per game. He shot 64% from the field in the tournament and he hit 60% of his FG attempts as a sophomore.

He's getting rave reviews on the AAU circuit this spring.
Malik Hicks and Terrence Birdsong of the Memphis Magic are getting coach's attention with their play @adidasuprising : CoachNeal

Malik Hicks (6’6″ Jr. SF-PF, Jackson (TN) South Side HS)
Physical forward has a good frame, is a plus athlete and is more of a power forward. He can drive and finish while getting fouled, draw contact to get to the line and make some tough shots, and one time he went coast to coast for two so he isn’t lacking ball skills.

Malik Hicks, 6-6 Forward, Jackson Southside (TN), 2015 , Memphis Magic Elite
The lone bright spot for the Memphis 17s was Hicks. The 6-6 wing is a relentless performer who impacted the game on both ends of the floor. He is an aggressive attacker of the basket as well as a capable three-point shooter. Motor is always on. More than one college coach remarked how Hicks reminded them of former Marquette star, Jae Crowder.

He dominated Nick Marshall in 4 head to head meetings last year. Dominate might be too mild a term.

Went to school with Malik. As should be obvious with the Hawk in my username, but I regress. Malik is a good player, plays for a good coach in a solid system. SS won 4A state B-Ball championship. They beat CPA along the way and play good competition year in and year out (Casey Prather went to North Side, etc...) I always thought he would end up getting looks. He's taller than your average 6'6" guy and he's still growing. I imagine with another good year and a run in the playoffs he should get a couple offers. Would love to see CDT show one of my fellow Hawks some love and hope Malik develops into a player we can use on The Hill.

If he's taller than the average 6'6 guy wouldn't that make him 6'7?

Just messin with ya. I saw him play against CPA and in the state championship. He's a good player but didn't strike me as a high major guy. He played a lot with his back to the basket. Not sure if that was because that's what he's asked to do or what. If he's developed a wing skill set he's easily a mid major prospect that could get some high major looks. he held his own against Blackwell when they played CPA. In fact, I would argue that he did more than hold his own, he dominated him. Fouled Blackwell out of the game.

I was at the semis and to say he dominated Blackwell is a real big stretch. Blackwell was hands down the best ballplayer at the tournament and he was overly aggressive and got in foul trouble. Southside couldn't stop him but he didn't get to play much over half the game. By the way the fouls were legit calls.

I believe the boat has sailed on the class of 2015. If Owens decides to sign tomorrow, we're full. If not, it looks like coach will carry the scholarship into next year. Just my humble opinion.

I too was at this years tournament. Blackwell May have been the best talent in the tournament but South Side had two players who had a better tournament than he did (Hicks and Chris McNeil. Blackwell is a hell of a player but I'm not sure of his true position at the next level.

Just to clarify, are you saying the boat has sailed on 2015 bigs or the class altogether? We'd still have 4 scholarships available unless Pops leaves and that scholarship is filled.

That was my point. If I'm remembering correctly he had something like 26 and 14 on Blackwell. Blackwell couldn't stop him.

I think you mean the class of 2014. We will have at least 3 scholarships to give in 2015 depending on what happens with Pops. If he stays, then we will have 4.

If Kentucky or Memphis does not want him we might have a chance.

i doubt he ends up with an offer from either school. He's a good player but with his size and frame i don't him playing his natural position for major D1 programs.

The lefty right? Agreed with your assessment. Undersized but I loved the way he attacked the CPA point guard. Was really shooting the 3 ball well.

He is not a lefty but we are talking about the same kid. From everything I have heard, he is an excellent student as well.

South side had a lefty that was stroking it as well if I'm remembering correctly. I could be wrong though.

I watched them several times over the past 2 years and I can't recall a lefty. I look to see South Side back in the thick of things next season as well. Hicks will have to step up even bigger next season. They lose all the other bigs. He can turn it on at times inside and out. That J Crowder comparison is on point. If you can remember Marcus hicks from Ole Miss back in the mid 90's, that's Malik's dad and his game is very similar to his dad.
