'15 TN OT Drew Richmond (UT Signee 2/4/15)

Kerbyson blows at left tackle. That was the comment I got from someone I am close with that played against him last year, but you don't need a first hand account to see that he is awful at tackle. He gets beat with a regularity that is frightening to watch. If he is our starting left tackle when the schedule gets rolling I will have some concerns. If Blair can't pull it off I want to see Kendrick.

The D-line rotation as well. How soon will McKenzie and Tuttle push for starting jobs? How much of an impact will Phillips make right away (no one seems to be talking about him at all)?

I'm also excited about Evan Berry. He seemed to make a big move in the spring, and I'm wondering if he might eventually beat out McNeil.

I think McKenzie starts this year. He is just special. I think this is the best two deep we have had at DT in a long time. Phillips looked great in the Army game. He dominated against the best in the country. I think we'll see him a lot this year, and he'll push for a starting job next. I'm really excited about our two sophomore safeties. I think that next year they could be the best tandem we have had since EB and Jackson.

The defensive unit next year will be ridiculous from an athletic standpoint. Even if Sutton leaves the CBs will still be a strength. IMO Those safeties will be nasty.

Sutton staying would just be the icing on the cake. I don't see it happening though if he has the year we are expecting. Martin will be here at least two years, right?

Richmond probably has first round potential, but I think he has a lot of work to do to get there. I think he looks a little soft in the videos I have seen. Jack Jones on the other hand will knock your block off. Blair seems to be another guy that just needs a mean streak. Not sure about Mosley yet... I hope we can find five guys that will punish some DL's! Let 'em go against Kahlil in practice and find the five who come out alive.

The word in Memphis was that Richmond was talented but lacked a mean streak. I don't mind seeing him play during the year because he is probably talented enough to leave before 5 years. But we have problems if we are relying on him as a starter. Kendrick and Blair should be playing. I know that Bama started a true freshman last year, but if we want to step up as a program, we need to be starting OL who have been in the program at least a year or two.

I also had been told that Kerbyson himself says that guard is his best position. I think he says that he was recruited as a guard.

Tackles like Robinson are extremely rare. He was one of the best to come out of high school in years. He would have been a high pick in this years draft. I'll be happy if Richmond can turn out like Tiny. Learn for a year, take some reps, and be ready to take a starting job in year two.

I don't think there is any doubt that guard is Kerbyson's best position. He and the coaches have said as much multiple times in interviews. Kerbyson did start to change his tune a little in the spring though, saying he was feeling more comfortable at LT and hoped to be able to stay there and focus on that one position rather than moving around a lot.

Our OL sucked last year. It will be bad this year but still slightly improved. I agree with that. It's really too bad, Id have us as the SEC East front runner with an average or slightly below average OL.

We will have an average line this year. They improved when they had a QB that could run the offense to it's full potential.

We had a two true freshman, and two other first time full starters with a QB who never kept the ball on the read.

Our line will be night and day from last year. Book it!

I agree that just an average O-line makes us serious contenders in the East. At the offensive skill positions (assuming Dobbs plays the vast majority of the meaningful snaps and we stay relatively healthy at WR, TE, and RB), we're in the top half of the SEC in terms of talent and potential.

On defense, we should be really good and appear to be on the verge of becoming dominant (though that might still be a year away).

O-line is the missing piece.

Dobbs just isn't a sitting duck like Worley... The results improved, not the ability/talent of our OL

Where are your stats so that I may check them, good sir?

I won't deny that Kerby was not good at LT in his first year of playing the position, but apparently our coaches thought he was best option. I just don't think slamming an Orange blooded TN boy who sacrificed a chance to look really good for two years and possibly set up a chance to be drafted as an OG to help the team is in what this guy deserves. JMO.
Now, Drew Richmond thread commence, sorry for contributing to OT convo but had to stick up for a guy sacrificing for.the team

The experience of a relatively inexperienced line definitely did improve as the season went along.

And there will be even more of that this season.

I agree with both of you. Dobbs' mobility definitely made the line look better. You can't deny that, but they also improved some as they gained more experience.

I think the OL will be like other positions of concern where the year starts off with veterans and then the veterans are replaced in the starting lineup, or at least replaced for more and more critical snaps, as the year goes on. At MLB, for example, I think Bynum starts the year and then is replaced by Kirkland or Bryant mid-year. I think Richmond starts this year but not game 1 on. He will probably get some meaningful snaps at RT and Kendrick may play some LT.

I think 2015 will be a good but not great year (best case 9-3 and worst case 7-5) but I think 2016 is going to be a special, special season and I bet that Butch is going to play for the best year this year while making sure our players are locked and loaded for 2016.

Well said, and if Kerbyson is indeed the guy for us at LT this year, I hope he improves and has a great senior year. It could happen.

Totally agree. Kerby has been "team first" all along. I doubt playing LT this season will adversely affect his draft status. The pro scouts know him and his capabilities. If he is the best player available, he will be taken. Otherwise, he will get his chance as a free agent.
