Can we just make a Memphis thread and all this discussion be moved there? This is about the 10th time this has happened in this thread.

I'm relatively young, I would like to meet a nice southern girl, I like to dirt bike, I like to go out and hit the bars occasionally, I take home a decent amount of money for a single male. I would only live at this place 2 weeks out of every month( I work in a different state). Not trying to derail the thread. Think we will land Richmond.

Based on your desire for outdoor activities and southern girls, I'd say Knoxville all the way.

Depends. I've owned homes in both Memphis and Nashville. I love both cities, but prefer living in Nashville now simply because my daughter and grandsons are here. But property is cheaper in Memphis, so for a younger, first time homeowner it might not be bad to start out there if someone were on a budget and has a job there.

My problem with Nashville is that it is growing at an alarming rate, at least IMO, and I'm afraid that it is going through what Austin, TX went through over the last 15-20 years with the influx of immigration from the rust belt and NE states. TN's population is projected to grow by around 1 million over the next decade, and a very large chunk of that projected growth is expected to be in Davidson and Rutherford counties. If my family was not in Nashville I would be tempted to move to Chattanooga, which I love. But it is projected to grow by leaps and bounds as well as more and more people leave stagnant states and move to TN.

Check out Asheville, NC. Think it would be a good fit for what you're looking for.

I've lived in all three and I like Knoxville best. Here's my take on all three:

--Knoxville: Large enough to provide things to do, small town feel, good schools (in some areas), you can get anywhere in town in a short amount of time. The mountains and most of all, The Big Orange.

Nashville: A lot to do, pro sports, Country Music, Downtown is alive and well, but size, traffic, and expansion were drawbacks.

Memphis: A lot to do, good county schools, great job opportunities, central location for travel thorughout the US. A Big City, tough to get to downtown area on weekends, crime and it's the most racially divided place I have evern been.

I didn't grow up in Knoxville but I'm glad I live here.

Gotta agree. Lived here in the Nashville area for years. Nashville is one of the "hottest" places in the country right now. Knoxville is beautiful but it is no where near as vibrant as Nashville, and Memphis is a craphole, and yes I have been there quite a bit. Nashville is growing by leaps and bounds and, I believe I heard somewhere it is projected to double in population in the next 20 years or so for the Metropolitan Statistical Area around Nashville.

What's up with all the Memphis hate in here? Memphis is a great city--awesome BBQ, Beale Street, the birthplace of rock-n-roll, and a lot potential Vol recruits. That being said, I like to visit Memphis, but I'm not sure I'd want to live there.

As a former resident of Memphis for 10+ yrs, I can assure you that you don't want to live there. You don't live every day on BBQ and Beale St.
Memphis = South Detroit.

Racially divided is correct. But makes it easier tell if you're in a bad neighborhood

I live right in the heart of Memphis. It gets pretty crunk over here sometimes. I like it for the most part. Although crime is definitely an issue. It's not really the fear of getting mugged or stabbed or something though. More like getting chairs stolen out of your front yard. Frustrating small stuff like that. Or heaven forbid you leave your car unlocked. I feel like most nights people stroll down my street at night checking doors for easy stuff to steal.

You get used to it. You can't avoid all of it no matter where you go. But you can get dogs and lock your doors and make things difficult for them. I probably will move out of the city whenever my wife and I have kids. But we'll see.

I love Memphis though. I see how stuff improves. But I also see how it's super self destructive in a lot of ways. It's kind of a losing battle. But at least we have the Grizzlies. In a lot of ways I feel like they have put us on the map and given us something to be proud of.

Make sure you consider state taxes before making that leap. They are high and unlikely to go down. You have to put up with a lot of very progressive ideas from state govt on down. It is better now but they are trying to undo decades of that mentality.

I should of clarified that I was talking about the beginning of his quote. Even if it's starring to get better, I'm going to steer clear.
