15' TN OL Alex Givens

I would go back and look at Petrino's classes at Arkansas. This was discussed when he left. I believe he had 2 top 20 classes. His skill players were very highly rated, and he got Mallett to transfer. Joe Adams, De'anthony Curtis, Jarius Wright, Tyler Wilson, Ronnie Wingo, and Knile Davis were all 4 stars in 2 years. Greg Childs was a 3 star. He also had a few DB's and OL's who were 4 stars and a 5 star DB.

I agree with the post above that the recipe for success is experienced lines, but you also need talent at the skilled positions. Ole Miss has experience on the lines and at LB, but Treadwell, Engram, Vincent Sanders, Walton, Dodson, Mathers, and Wilkins were all at least 4 stars. 2 of their DB's, Prewitt and Conner, were also a 4 and 5 star. Mississippi State is the only team to be successful this year without that kind if talent, and they have a dynamic QB. Plus, the season is not over, and this goes in cycles for them. They won't succeed like this on a yearly basis- this is a year they have experience and a talented QB. JMO.

A top 20 class isn't necessarily in the top half of this conference though. It doesn't mean a lot. Maybe not even the top half of the SECW. My point was that you don't half to recruit at a top 10 level to be successful. Teams who recruit too 10 classes each year are usually successful, but there are exceptions.

Arky and MS State may be a able to get to a consistent 9-win season type team but they will never win an SEC title. Same with Mizzou. Teams that recruit better than others always take home the hardware. Pick a year and it holds true. We are recruiting at a level that has the chance to win SEC titles. I am not worried about where Arky and State are at this point because their ceiling will never be (winning) SEC champ level. I believe Ole Miss has the chance to unseat Auburn or Bama or LSU not just because their coaches are able to squeeze every ounce out of a 3-star, it's because they are recruiting better than their competition. If our coaching staff is what we think they are and with this talent we can unseat UGA and Florida. I believe it.

The fact that Butch pulled Abernathy out of GA with Pruitt recruiting him tells me all I need to know. Pruitt is the only worry I have going forward, and Butch just won a recruiting battle with him, even with Pruitt being a DB coach who has put multiple DBs in the NFL recently. Pruitt is going to make UGA strong on defense soon. However, he's going to have to work to get recruits he wants out of GA and getting Abernathy proves just that.

Oh, I agree that you don't have to have top 10 classes. 2009 was his best class, and he was third in the west behind Bama and LSU at #16. It also matters by recruiting needs. My point was people thought Petrino was playing with much, much less. He certainly wasn't playing with Bama or LSU talent, but he brought in good talent. He brought in guys who are now playing in the NFL. But his two best years were also on par with bringing in the talent: he finished tied for 2nd in the west in 2010 and 3rd in the west in 2011.

I didn't know that about Pruitt. That is dang impressive.

Truth. It also helps to have a proven system. Mullen brought one from his days with Urban Meyer, then modified it to MSU's roster/recruiting.

I have always felt that Mullen was the reason for Urbans success at BG then Utah then Florida. Urban admitted that he, Mullen and Billy G came up with their system at their first stop together. As soon as Mullen left Florida they went to crap on offense. Then urban got the heck out of dodge until he found Braxton miller waiting for him.

Mullen was fortunate that he was able to build a program the way it needs to be done. It takes time. Miss State expectations were not crazy and calling for his head after 2 years. I believe I heard the other day that every single player, except 2, that are seniors redshirted.

The downside of all those red-shirt seniors is that they lose almost everyone after this year and will come crashing back to earth in 2015. I think Dak turns pro early and Mullen cashes in and takes a bigger job after this season. MSU fans better enjoy it while they can because this is a one-time deal.

Another kid butthurt over "not getting enough love"

I dug up an article from a while back in which Givens' coach says "he's all about Tennessee and that's where he wants to go."

I'm really torn about who's to blame in these situations. The school or the player.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in what Givens' coach is saying. Jeff Brothers is a Vandy man anyway.

He's not the type of recruit that's a game changer anyways. If we were winning 9-10 games and had more quality depth then why not take a shot on a kid like this. But that's not where we are at. We need difference makers.

Wasn't trying to be a d!ck sorry

No worries. After I read the first page, and the post about his older brother being a Vandy homer, I wonder if he was trolling. I'll keep the orange tinted shades on for now though. :)

Looks like he found the beanie section at the Big & Tall store and decided to take a selfie to troll the fans on twitter. It doesn't look like the beanie has been worn very much either, which makes it even more suspicious. Not a true Vol IMO, unless double smoke screen and Butch lays us with a nice OL as a Christmas gift? Naaah. Good try though, Alex.

Don't want him regardless. I'd rather hold out for something better. Let him ride pine at Ole Miss.

Barton Simmons thinks he will be better than Richmond in long run at Tackle. We need tackles bad. I'd take a chance especially with his teammate being a top in state LB for next class
