'15 TN LB Josh Smith

If CBJ wanted this kid he would still be recruiting him. HE DOESN'T WANT HIM!!!! I'm not bashing the kid but he is not a take for us. CBJ doesn't stop recruiting players in July because thet are already committed. I promise that other coaches are still going to recruit KM till the end even though he is committed to us. Josh may be a "Vandy Lock" but that is not the reason we let him walk. JMO

To me a Vandy Lock is a lot like a zip tie. May temporarily keep something closed but as soon as it receives tension it snaps.

Vandy fans are just delusional! Over on Vandymania they are saying that he should be a 5*.

Now he's a solid 4*, but he's not a 5*.

He had offers from a majority of the SEC Schools and probably wants to get on the field early and that is why he did not choose Alabama or Auburn. Vanderbilt only has about 15 slots to fill so they do have to be somewhat selective and can't sign 25+ per year, because they do not have the attrition like many of the schools. I am not saying Mason is being selective or making stretches as I have no idea if Mason can recruit or not as we have yet to see any of his players hit the field. In fact, this will be the 1st year we actually get to see 90% of the recruits that Franklin recruited to see how well his recruits pan out.

The post was originally made because of the comments that stated Josh Smith has not progressed and thus schools and coaches backed off of him.

A big reason, probably the biggest reason he chose Vandy was due to his brother Emmanuel. Smith's a very good player and will likely be their highest rated player. Truth is, Tennessee backed off him a long time ago for whatever reason. As far as comparing him to Cecil, both players were at The Opening for good reason and while both had nice offer lists, Cecil's was more impressive.

In the bigger picture, Cecil is a member of UT's current top 5 class while Smith is a part of Vandy's top 55 class.

Got the feeling we stopped recruiting this one months ago
Yep we did IMO.

Josh is a VERY good player. I'm not going to be the butthurt on here saying otherwise. He was always in my top few from the state this year and after the Opening he moved up to #2-3 in the state. Josh made the all-Opening team at LB and was elite in coverage and with straight line speed. This kid was going to Vandy as soon as his bro did, and that's why a lot of his offers weren't committable. Think Berry twins and not Duke Shelley. Josh has potential to be a top few round WILL in a 4-3, but isn't Vandy bringing in the Stanford 3-4? If so he won't be nearly as good as a 3-4 WILB but still good.

My top 10 in-state guys:
1. Van Jefferson
2. Kyle Phillips
3. Josh Smith
4. Jack Jones
5. Drew Richmond
6. Jauan Jennings
7. Donovan Sheffield
8. Zach Stewart
9. Rico McGraw
10. Josh McMillon

Cam Ordway just missed the cut.

Yeah they are going to transition to a 3-4

No. The reason why most of his offers weren't committable was because THEY WERE NOT COMMITABLE.

Comparing Josh Smith to Evan and/or Elliot Berry is a joke. No other SEC teams other that Vanderbilt or Kentucky would have taken his commitment.

And Josh Smith rated more highly than Richmond, Jennings, McGraw, Jones, Stewart, etc.? No way.

One of the very few SEC level players going to VU in the past two cycles. Like many others, I really wonder where he fits in their new scheme.

Smith is a terrific athlete with good size. However, great athletes do not always make for great football players. He is a combine superstar. But then when you put on the film it is much less impressive than his combine performances. First hand information, he was not being recruited much at all by the big schools that 'offered' him. Great kid and great athlete. Hopefully he gets to college and improves significantly and has a great college career.

He was a top 3 LB at the Opening. Explain that?

Uh oh...here it comes. Cue the Cottrell argument all over again.

Not exactly the same scenario. Bottom line is he is not a great football player. Period. Look back at my post and it has nothing to do with his commitment to Vanderbilt. His path and story line through high school and college will probably look eerily similar to Jacques Smith.

I wasn't criticizing. Sounds like you are closer to him than most. I have no doubt that our staff did not pursue him that much this year because Butch lands in-state players or makes it a tight race if we want them. We dropped off for a reason. Just figured that argument would come up again...kind of the VN way.

You are most likely correct about that, it is the VN way.

The Opening is pretty useless for LB's. It pretty much only tells you about whether or not LB's are athletic enough to do 7-on-7.
It means he was great in coverage too. I've said it since way before Emmanuel picked VU Josh is a great player. It seems like this thread is full of butthurt IMO. (Not talking about you btw). Saying Vandy got a good player won't kill some of you. The rest of their class besides Sheffield will blow.

Noone has said he's a bad player. Having a top 3 of UK VU Purdue means he isn't a 5* caliber LB. He's good, but not better than the ones on our board.

Josh is a good player but he is better suited for 3-4 at LB. we don't need any more tweeners in that role and with his bro at vandy we didn't bother wasting recruiting time on him. Butch gets to know these kids and those around them and knows when to pick your battles and when its not worth it. If you look at the schools Smith focused on they ran 3-4 defense.

Here's the problem for vandy. Masons recruiting at an awful level to where Smith will have to be the superhero without very many good sidekicks. So they better hioe they hit the right guys. Butch is recruiting a freaking army limiting the pressure of one kid.

Josh was the MVP Line backer at the opening. Watch him on ESPNU. Very impressive. Good kid who wants to major in engineering. Committed to Vandy but would have been a great kid to get IMO.

Their recruiting class is awful. I finally looked at it.

Hopefully he doesn't......kid's headed to Pansybilt. 😊

yeh they have like two kids with other SEC offers (Sheffield and Smith)

the rest of their kids they had to fight off Jacksonville State,GA Southern, Yale, Arky St, etc.

They love it when kids pick them over Harvard and Yale.

That's wonderful from and academic standpoint. Absolutely horrible from an athletic one.
