I have seen it play out many times where that is just not the case. Fans always claim just about every kid rated a 4 or 5 star is a take no matter what. "We will make room". Do I hope the kid picks UT and is a part of the 2015 class? Sure I do. I just don't buy into the thinking that every kid who holds a UT offer has a reserved seat at the table no matter how long his recruitment plays out. Sawyers is a prime example. He is a 4 star in state recruit and I'm not sure the staff would take him right now as they seem to like Evans more. If another quality DE wants to commit now and the staff thinks he is comparable to Philips, he could very well miss his chance to wear Orange.

On Wednesday, Thigpen spent more time in the Midstate and went by Hillsboro High School to check in on Kyle Phillips and defensive line coach Steve Stripling was with him as well to see one of the Vols' priorities in the state.

It was a busy day for Phillips as Clemson, Ole Miss and Mississippi State were at the school as well.

Tennessee is in good shape early on with Drew Richmond (No. 1), Kyle Phillips (No. 3), Josh Smith (No. 6) and, obviously, Jack Jones (No. 9), who already has committed to the Vols.

I would expect UT to be at least a contender for Jauan Jennings (No. 4), Joshua McMillon (No. 5) and Van Jefferson (No. 8), and I wouldn't be surprised if the Vols remained in the picture with Rico McGraw (No. 2) despite his recent commitment to Georgia.

So far, Tennessee hasn't offered Vanderbilt commitment Donovan Sheffield (No. 7) — and I wouldn't expect the Vols to be much of a contender for him — or Alex Givens, although UT still is keeping an eye on him.

Also, it's definitely worth noting that these rankings will change plenty over the next year, so these aren't necessarily the only 10 in-state guys people should focus on in the 2015 class.

We'll take a closer look at the in-state 2015 class with some content right after signing day.

How sweet would it be by this time next week after all the 2014 faxes roll through to have Kyle Phillips commit one day, then Jaason Lewis the next.

Apparently Saban was by his school yesterday. Fortenberry has said UT is in good position with Phillips but many big time schools are turning up the heat for his services. Hopefully he commits early and shuts it down but if he's interested in these other schools recruiting him it might go until next winter.

REASON FOR THE RANKING: Although Phillips was only able to play in a handful of games this past season because of a season-ending shoulder injury, Phillips showed why he's already received 20 offers from some of the best in the country. Phillips shows a nice burst off the edge and real strength to overpower tackles as well.

THE SKINNY: Another instate player the Vols highly covet, Phillips has been on campus several times now and has seemed to take a liking to Tennessee. The Vols have ace recruiter Tommy Thigpen after the Hillsboro prospect and that does nothing but help Tennessee. But, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and others all the see the same thing Tennessee does and are coming after him as well. But, the Vols have positioned themselves nicely early on.

#1 prospect in the mid-state IMO for next year and Top 3 overall in the state. Big-time prospect. Love this kids game and ceiling.

Most past years, a talent like Phillips would be far and away the top talent in Middle TN. Next year, however, it could be a number of different guys. McGraw, Jennings (at Safety), Smith, and Sheffield could all make a case.

I think Jones is a better prospect than most of those guys you mentioned and he's mid-state too. Personally, I think Phillips is the best prospect in the mid-state this year and I'd probably put Jones at #2. I really think Phillips has elite potential. It's definitely another good year in that area. Jefferson and Amadi belong up there as well.

I forgot about Jefferson and Amadi. They're definitely of the same ilk. On Jones, I'm glad he's a Vol and he has a lot of potential, but I do think he'll take while to develop.

If I had to rank a #1 for the mid-state, mine would be Jennings, assuming he's going to play Safety. I think Sheffield deserves to be at the top of that list, too.

I'd have Sheffield high too. Jones will take time to develop but that is the norm for most offensive line prospects, even most of the elite ones.

Very true. Apparently, Saban has been blowing his phone up. I think that is good indicator of Jones' potential as an OL.

one of tennessee’s top in-state targets in the 2015 class, phillips has made multiple visits to ut over the past several months and appears to be high on the vols. He attended at least a couple of tennessee’s home games this season, and he received multiple visits from the vols’ coaches during the recent contact period. Alabama, florida, ole miss and vanderbilt also are believed to be among his early favorites.
