A little bit more on the Kyle Phillips commitment last weekend. The Vols started trending positively toward Phillips throughout Friday evening, and while we already had scheduled John to make the insane Jacksonville-to-San-Antonio journey, it became increasingly obvious that it had a chance to be an even more productive trip in light of Phillips.

By midnight, several of us were getting texts indicating the Vols had gained significant ground on Phillips, and John got a text at 1:30 a.m. --- around the time he was nearing an Atlanta airport hotel --- suggesting the Vols had emerged as the clear leader.

Then the next morning, as John was making his connecting flight in Dallas for the final leg to San Antonio, he got a call indicating that Phillips had committed to the Vols and would be sharing his comments on the matter with VolQuest.com shortly thereafter. John finished the story of Phillips' commitment riding in the backseat of the cab on his way directly from the San Antonio airport to the Alamodome.

IMO, 2 things worked in our favor on Friday.

1) The curb stomping of Iowa

2) When Barnett went down for a little bit it was pretty evident our depth was lacking so Phillips saw an opportunity for himself to make an early contribution.

I think you see more of a rotation, but I'd be surprised if Vereen is mostly shutout. Guy gives 110% all the time and has earned his spot. Rotating through DEs keeps everyone fresh and could make for a pass rush that is tremendously fun to watch.

I think Volnation has forgot what it looks like to have QUALITY depth for once. Everyone is better if you can rotate 3 deep at a position. If Barnett and Maggitt can get 50% of the snaps at each side of the line then Lewis and Phillips can get 30% at each spot then Mixon and Vereen get 20% everyone will be much better off and our D will be hitting the QB with regularity.

Mixon is probably going to stay at DT, but I agree having enough to rotate is huge

I agree. I didn't see anything that counted snaps but it sure seemed like Barnett, Maggitt, Williams, and O'Brien spent a ridiculous amount of time on the field this year. It makes their performance on the year and their conditioning all the more impressive. Imagine what this defense can do with a DL rotation where everybody is fresh.
