'15 TN DE Kyle Phillips (UT commit 1/3/15)

I just noticed that Barton Simmons changed his CB from Tenn to LSU two weeks ago for Phillips and there hasn't been any buzz here about him lately. I was wondering if anyone here had an opinion on where we stand with him. It doesn't look like he is making a decision anytime soon.

With him so concerned with seeing the product on the field, IMO he ends up choosing bama or lsu. If winning really matter that much to him, I just don't think he ends up choosing our Vols. I'd guess the coaches are not really waiting on him at this point.

Not necessarily sitting pretty, but much MUCH improved. Still need/want Phillips

Yea, "sitting pretty" probably doesn't exactly describe our situation at DE. He is probably a guy we take no matter what, if he wants in but I don't think it will hurt us to bad if he decides to go elsewhere. JMO of course.

P Fort responding to a poster asking if the ship had sailed on Kyle Phillips

The ship has not sailed. Tennessee still wants him and they are still battling for him. It's hard to see them turning him down. You never turn down quality defensive linemen, especially instate guys.

I think with Barnett and Hendrix showing they can be productive at end, we've cooled on his recruitment a little. The Settle recruitment heating back up gives some proof to that. I still think he could end up here, but could also end up on the outside looking in.
I doubt our current roster situation has any bearing on recruiting the DE position. We will always need quality depth, where you can rotate guys in without worrying about a big dropoff between 1st, 2nd and even 3rd teamers.

We may be slow-playing things to see how we look with some other prospects, like Sweat...for example. If this team starts out hot, through the first 4-5 games, that might be enough to swing players of his caliber

UT has to win 6 to 7 games to have a chance with Phillips. If UT can swing Amadi, win, go to a bowl and prove they are progressing I believe he'll sign with UT.

I've seen you mention the Phillips/Amadi connection a few times now. Just curious why that would be such a huge factor in landing Kyle? Looking at the recruiting season play out it does not look like Ole Miss was/is a huge factor for Phillips. Looks to be UT, Bama, and LSU. With Amadi committed to Ole Miss, not sure I see the connection. If Ugo wanted to play with Phillips in college, why did he commit so early to a school Kyle was not really looking at?

And from what I've read, Bama is not really putting the full court press on Phillips. So as of today, LSU seems to be our biggest competition here.

I still think personally that he ends up a VOL.... only thing that might come into play is numbers... but even with Richmond, Tuttle.... you still have probably 1 spot left... but if they sign Van... then numbers get tricky. But it's early and I'd hope by signing day it'd work itself out, somehow... and it usually does.

P Fort-Midweek Recruiting Notes

Also, I talked with Kyle Phillips last night and his Hillsboro team plays on Saturday in Kentucky and he said if he's feeling up to it on Sunday he wants to make it to the Tennessee game. That will be a Sunday morning decision he said, but he's hoping to make it to Knoxville.

Someone asked Barton Simmons why he changed his prediction fron Tennessee to LSU and this was his response:
Don't think Tennessee leads right now and based on several different conversations, I think LSU has got the slight edge right now. That can still change. Mom likes Bama apparently and I think Tennessee just has to win some big games to make a push to get back on top.

Thanks for stopping by Barton. Do your gut think it would be just a matter of Tennessee making it to a bowl or do you think it would need to pull off another upset of a top 15 team like last year? Or is too hard to say?
Barton:
My sense is that Tennessee would just have to look good. Take a big step forward. Not sure that a 7-6 or 6-7 season is going to cut it compared to the kind of years bama and LSU may have.

f he's wanting to see us have something like an 8 win season, then I guess I'd change my prediction away from Tennessee too. Thanks for the insight.

How silly is Kyle Phillips going to feel when UT is playing Auburn in Atlanta in December 2015? lol

KYLE PHILLIPS
Defensive end
Hillsboro High School, Nashville, Tenn.
Crystal Ball picks: Tennessee 84%, Vanderbilt 8%, LSU 4%, Alabama 4%
Tennessee has been the favorite for Phillips on the Crystal Ball for months, and not much has changed recently, although he named a top five of UT, Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee State earlier this month. One prediction this month added to the Vols’ sizable lead over Vanderbilt, but LSU and Alabama have received the last two picks for Phillips, the state’s No. 2 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite.

If you are a recruit, and cannot see what is being built in Knoxville, then you are blind. You shouldn't need to see a huge improvement from year 1 to year 2, especially when the season will be dependent upon huge productivity from freshmen and sophomores with brand new OL and DL. 6+ wins and a bowl is a huge improvement with the youthful roster. He is being unrealistic, IMO, if he needs to see 8 to 9 wins this year.

Let's see. This year we may have a slight improvement. Next year will see a little more improvement. Then in 2016 we have no excuse not to be competing for the East

Right now nobody knows whats being built in Knoxville. Butch is recruiting great obviously but its not unreasonable for anyone, especially a recruit, to wait and see what he does on the field in year 2.

I know...a championship program is being built. I refuse to believe anything else. :)

You can never have too much talent at DE.

I don't care how good Barnett and Hendrix appear to be, you don't stop recruiting other great talent at the same position
