'15 NC DT Shy Tuttle (UT commit 9/26/14)

What gives you this newfound inclination? Is it that we beat Utah state and Arkansas state and Oklahoma covered the 21 point spread against us?

While nothing you said is false, what I saw against Oklahoma was a team that was a couple plays away (and an all-time horrible officiating call) from beating a top 5 team on the road while playing 20+ true freshmen. There is reason for optimism if you've followed this team closely. Especially when you account for how average the SEC East is compared to the West.

I was at the Oklahoma game and will choose to respectfully disagree with you on the "a couple of plays from beating them" statement. However, I think our fundamental difference arises from what causes one to be optimistic. You were optimistic due to better than expected play against OK ( my assumption). I will choose to be optimistic when I see us put up a dominant performance (or maybe neck and neck is proper adjective, either a win or a loss) consistently against decent SEC teams.

I mean, I feel like "a couple plays away" is objectively true. The fumble no call cost us 7 points (maybe more if we would have scored as a result of the fumble). The other two plays that we actually had control over were the pick 6 from the 2 and Croom letting it slip through his hands for a pick. If we had made those plays, that is a 21 point turn of events. If the fumble had been called, we at the very least would have prevented 7 more points. Now, you can't accurately evaluate the past with hindsight like that, but we would, at the very least, had been there until the last play and might well have just outright beaten them.

7-5 is still attainable for this team. The sooner we can get our first big SEC win the better for us to make sure we reach that watermark or even better.

If we can beat UGA then 8-4 is possible. But lose that and I will continue to hope for 7-5.

Lose to UF and I will be down to just crossing my fingers and praying for 6-6.

Yeah, no kidding. How do you go with USC over these two teams? Seeing Driskell completely crap his pants against Bama was promising. Florida looks like a 50/50 game at home right now at worst. If we can beat one of Georgia or USC this could be a very nice season.

I expected to worry a lot more about Florida this year, but that last game was a complete disaster.

Chatanooga I get your point. Florida, I'll believe we beat them when I see it. That includes this year.

I'm inclined to agree - not necessarily on the win, but that game was definitely closer than the score indicated. Even forgetting the awful fumble call, if Croom catches that TD and they punch it in on 3rd and 2, that's 27-24 OU.

Yep, because if that were true, East Carolina should be able to hang at least 70 on UNC.....

Oh, wait....

And based on their margin of victory against Vandy, Temple should be able to beat South Carolina and Georgia? Maybe they should join the SEC. They could dominate the East.

Both of your posts are dead on! It's simple math...3 plays/non-reversal on fumble accounts for a 28 point differential. Simple as that. Did we look like with our OL play that it should be that simple? No, but the fact of the matter is that it is a true statement. For those who disagree, you must have watched a different game. On top of all of this, we aren't even including the 8-10 holding calls that were missed, which are drive killers.

Why does it matter though? Lots of games could be changed by a few plays. The only thing that matters is the final score.

Anyways, any updates on Tuttle? Any new developments?

I think it shows us (and the team more importantly) that we aren't that far off. On the road with 20+ true FR against a top 5 team...it matters for confidence. It's why many on here are cautiously optimistic about this year. It seems we are further ahead than any of us could have dreamed in our progress with this young team.

I was more talking about why does it matter if a couple plays changed the game?

Everyone can see we are getting better. We are on record pace as well. Butch Jones has done a tremendous job.

That being said, the final outcome is the only thing that matters to everyone except Vol fans.

If we keep recruiting like we have then we will be able to compete with Oklahoma. It won't be a 24 score differential.

In my opinion it was a much closer game then a 24 point differential... It bugged me that the commentators kept trying to put us out of the game in the first quarter... At every turn they kept talking about how We were out of it.... I'm just sayin we don't drop at td. It's a completely different looking game to the non vol fans.

”I’ve been in contact with all three schools a lot and it’s going to be really tough,” said the 6-foot-2, 312-pound Tuttle. “I’m pretty excited, though. It’s a big step in my life. They all have good things to offer and you don’t want to tell a school no, but you have to."

Tennessee: “I like their coaches, too. I also like how they are building the program and the direction they have it going.”

According to Tuttle, no team has the edge at this time.
