CarolinaBlue spoke with North Davidson High School head football coach Mark Holcomb on Thursday afternoon to discuss Tuttle's thought process in terms of his recruitment, his decision date, and how the 6-foot-3, 315-pound prospect is used on defense.
Holcomb said Tuttle should decide on his college choice "sometime in late August." He continued:
"Since he (Tuttle) is graduating after the fall, he's going to graduate early so he wants to speed the process up a bit."
Tuttle plans to be an early enrollee at the school he selects.
Currently, Tuttle's 247Sports Crystal Ball is 65% North Carolina, 27% Tennessee, and 8% Clemson.
When asked if North Carolina and Tennessee were the two leaders right now for the North Davidson rising senior, Holcomb was pretty strong in refuting those claims.
"He's always liked N.C. State, always liked Clemson. But the Miami one, to be honest came out of left field. That was one of the ones he has been talking about. In terms of distance its a littler farther away from the rest of them.
"The only one that I think would be a little surprising would be Miami. I would be surprised with that one."
Holcomb talked about the recruitment process and what Tuttle has been considering in terms of a a school.
"He has been going from idea to idea since he started the whole process," Holcomb explained. "The biggest thing that he and I have talked about is he has to figure out what he wants. I think he is still trying to make sure that the decision he makes is something he wants.
"At one point he was looking for something close by, but then I don't think that became an issue. The more and more he got involved in his recruitment the less and less an issue the distance became. A big decision he has to make is 'do I want to stay in state or do I want to go out of state?' I think that is the biggest decision he has to make right now. That will help everything else settle into place."
As the head coach, Holcomb says he talks with college coaches every week that are recruiting Tuttle. He stays in touch with UNC offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic, N.C State defensive line coach Ryan Nielson, Tennessee tight ends coach Mark Elder, and Clemson's assistant head coach Danny Pearman.
Holcomb also elaborated on Tuttle as a defensive player in college and how he is used in North Davidson's defense.
"In college he'll probably be a three technique, inside interior lineman. In terms of what he does for us...we try and move him around as much as possible, so people don't get a feel for where he is always going to be. We try and make him a moving target.
"(Tuttle) is a big strong kid. He moves really well for the size he is. He has been blessed with a lot of God-given ability, but he's worked to get faster and stronger."
