'15 NC DT Shy Tuttle (UT commit 9/26/14)

I would argue that Toledo has been a better football program the last 20yrs. Memphis is a bottom 5 program.

I dunno. Maybe. I don't follow them much, but I do know they were 6-5 two seasons in a row before him and 9-2 when he was there.

FWIW I don't necessarily disagree with you that Saban's current success is largely due to his yearly parade of 5-stars. Nor do I disagree that Tiger High sucks and is a perennial bottom-feeder. But Saban always gets there one way or the other. It just takes him longer without elite talent (Michigan State). That's why he's the highest-paid coach in the country and what makes him different from these guys that wouldn't win many games at all without their elite talent (Richt, probably).

I do think there's a valid argument to be made that Saban struggles when everyone else has equal talent or when he doesn't have full acquisition control over his own talent (his time with the 'Phins), but in CFB his coach effect is quite pronounced.

The places that Porter has received acclaim (LSU and Texas) mostly sell themselves and have great talent in their backyard. Any recruiting coordinator at those two places is going to get more credit than they deserve. Porter's tenure at Memphis produced all of 3 victories and he has bounced around a lot. Reminds me of Trooper Taylor.

Porter actually recruited better talent to Memphis, especially on defense. They have had a much better defense since Fuente has been there, and many have been Porter's recruits. Porter was only there 2 years, and his problems were organizational and player development. He wasn't ready to be a head coach, but he relates to players.

Crazy thing is, even if we pull all those guys I still see Picou getting on the field. He's just so explosive and more of a 3-tech than the other guys. I think we'll get good use out of all those guys and they'll all add plenty to our defense.

He's disruptive.. Something we haven't been in the middle in a while

Any relation to Mr. Tuttle from Saved By the Bell? He looked more like a guard.

If there's one commonality in all the D-lineman we're in play for that I like see, it's the level of explosiveness/athleticism, motor, and first step that all of them seem to possess (McKenzie, Tuttle, Jones, Picou, Settle, Sweat). Disrupting, athletic D-lineman pay dividends.

This recruitment is looking better & better for the Vols by the day. Starting to shape up very nicely.

Shy Tuttle, DT, 6-2/308, Lexington, NC.

Any general manager or coach of any football team at any level will tell you that you can't have enough defensive tackles who can play. It's the most coveted position player in football by coaches and Tuttle has options galore. Tuttle's current top five includes Tennessee, Clemson, NC State, UNC, and Miami.

Tuttle has indicated to some that the Vols might be out front, but recently he has said no one leads. He's been on Tennessee's campus multiple times including last year for a game and most recently in June for a camp where he got to meet Jon Gruden which he noted was one of the trips highlights.

At this point, those five appear to be in the best shape to land official visits. Tuttle doesn't have a time table for making a decision or a timetable for when he might take his official trips. Most close to Tuttle believe that his recruitment is setting up to be a Tennessee and North Carolina battle.

I really like our chances here being the only SEC school in his top 5. Hopefully Mckenzie puts the full court press on him after he commits. I have a gut feeling that Mckenzie will be catalyst for the remainder of Dream Team 15. (and yes I know that is not exactly a bold statement there.)

I've never felt we had a shot with Tuttle, but by gosh, things are beginning to look pretty swell, aren't they?

Then why bother having a message board? We may as well follow your lead and blindly agree with every decision a person makes because they are deemed a head coach at a major university. By your rationale every person that coaches in college football is qualified and should never be questioned. Let me ask you this, when did you realize your philosophy was hot garbage when Dooley was running the show here? Not saying Butch is as incompetent as Dooley, but to this point all of the praise he has received is based on how it seems things are going here based solely on recruiting and what he did at mid major schools. You don't want to acknowledge my comments, that's fine. But don't insinuate what other people should do based on your opinion. Because that does make you sound like an arse, and a delusional one at that.

Fair questions.

I never was a Dooleyite and never bought into the "diamond in the rough" recruiting so not a fair comparison. Dude was a terrible hire from the start.

I don't question who Alabuba signs as its obvious Saban knows what he's doing and takes who he wants in recruiting.

CBJ by all accounts is kicking butt in recruiting - much better there then his on-field results. To me, he's still got a lot to prove before we will know if he was a good hire. By all accounts, things are looking up in Knoxville. If he signs another top 10 class this year and the team shows improvement on the field then he will continue to get my "benefit of the doubt" treatment. If this season is a dumpster fire then I'll start wondering about him also. If this make me a delusional arse then so be it.

McKenzie has been pressing on Tuttle on Twitter as of late. With the NC investigation going on, too, I see us landing Tuttle.
