'15 LB FL Cecil Cherry (former Vol commit)

Running backs coach Robert Gillespie was in middle Tennessee on Monday visiting with Jalen Hurd before he heads back down to Florida on Tuesday to check in on Cecil Cherry and the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Burfict ran a 4.9 at the combine.

He is handling business in the NFL.

Cecil is fast enough and his instincts, reaction time, and his disregard for the ball carriers well being will allow him to make the rest up

40 times are useless for these kinds of players. Half of how well a kid runs a 40 is how well their track start is. That has nothing to do with football speed. You can watch his film and see he's not a 5.1.

The problem with most of our players on defense is not really speed, but the lack of football knowledge. When you consistently take bad angle after bad angle, you either don't understand what your are doing wrong or you are incapable of learning how to fix it.

I agree to a point, but straight line speed on our defense is lacking too.

I'm just saying a sophomore in high school who has never run track can be lightning on the field and not run a good 40 time.

I agree. Also, the time it takes to read and react to a play can slow a LB down a lot more than a slow 40. If it takes you just an extra 1/2 second to diagnose a play, that'll slow you up worse than an tenth or two slower 40.

Wow. Really wish this kid were eligible this year. You can tell he LOVES contact, and he hits so dang hard. When an opposing player ran into CC, there was no falling forward. Period. The buck stops with Cecil Cherry.

If he can run a solid 40 at the camps he goes to, I see no reason he wouldn't be one.

Some scouting services might say he's not speedy enough to be a 5* though. I'm not sure his skillset is as well suited for the shorts and t-shirt, 7 on 7, 1 on 1 coverage with RBs type drills most of the camps run and base evaluations off.

I don't mean any of that as a knock on him. Kid is a football player and plays the game the way it should be played: violently and behind his pads. I just think many recruiting services overvalue the non contact drills they run an Cherry may not end up beig as highly ranked as he may deserve.

That won't make him any less of a great LB though.

Wow... Is all I can say. Can you say #1 overall player. I had no idea he could run the ball as well as he hits. Cecil for 3rd RB in our class next year haha jk. We need this man killing people on defense
