'15 LB FL Cecil Cherry (former Vol commit)

I see plenty of speed in his highlight film. I see a freight train going full speed and destroying whatever is in it's path.

How fast do people think the MLB really has to be? Brandon Spikes(all everything at Florida in a 4-3) ran a 5.1 40. Think about that for a minute. Lol He made plays everywhere in the short zone. Quickness, instincts, defeating blocks, nastiness, reading keys, and overall football IQ matter the most at the MLB position. IMO

I like speed at MLB, but if you don't have it then you better have those traits - spikes does struggle in pass coverage (more in NFL than in college ill grant you)

but if you have enough nastiness, instincts, and IQ that can overcome a lot

defeating blocks is just huge though too - if you can take on that OL you don't have to run around him

Strength and Conditioning coaches all across the country would disagree. People make a living teaching/coaching speed everyday.

haha - yep i believe the saying goes you can't teach height - i remember b/c my high school basketball coach would say it to me quite often

I love all the old quotes. Two of my favorites:

"If you can't get a better player, get a player better." --Eddie Robinson

"If you can't be good, be big." --Willis White

Man I've been saying this for a long time and Spikes is the perfect example. If you know what you're doing and where you're supposed to be and have good football instincts it makes you look a lot faster than you really are.

Now if you're slow and poorly coached and have poor fb instincts.... not a good combination.

Hard work can make up for lack of natural speed to a point. Herschel Walker got so fast because he worked his butt off. He ran and ran and ran, every day. Push-ups, sit-ups, running, dragging a tire, making sure his knees were high. All simple yet effective.

No I'm NOT saying everyone can be Herschel Walker, but everyone can get faster.

And to clarify, since this is the Cecil Cherry thread. I am NOT saying he is slow! lol

Yeah you can work your butt off and get a little faster/quicker but some people are just born with speed while others aren't. Do you think someone with a 5.1 40 time like Spikes could be taught to run a 4.5?

Haha. I saw an old paper my dad wrote in English/lit class in high school. In it, he said:

I didn't make the high school basketball team because I had a condition. That condition was I wasn't any good.

No but a dedicated Spikes could probably hit the 4.7-4.8 range huge difference in times. There aren't a lot of 4.5 LBs who are better than Spikes. He's a beast of player.

Of course he is. He played for Florida. Your high regards to Florida past and current players is legendary. Let us both hope that soon you will start talking about Vols this way.

If a LB who runs a 5.0 diagnoses a play a half second faster or gets off a block a half second sooner than a 4.5 guy, the speed difference doesn't matter any more.

Guys, I never said he was slow. Poster asked if he would get his 5th star. I just said in order to get his 5th star he would have to work on his speed and coverage skills. I said that because I faintly remember one of the VQ or 247 guys saying that

Don't lie. Secretly you want him to bulk up and move to DT because he'll never have the wheels for LB.

What???? Dude he was an All-American LB and a is a high level pro LB. What's your point? Who from UT that's a high level LB that runs a 5.1? Most of our guys that are good usually can run sideline to sideline all game.
