'15 IN LB Darrin Kirkland Jr (UT Commit 12/15/14)

You hear all the time that someone has eidetic or photographic memory. Very rarely is it a true case if it. You can have an excellent memory and/or a style of recall that involves seeing images in your mind without having true eidetic memory.

Not saying he doesn't, but 99% of the time it's an exaggeration when people say that. Those are the people who can look at a series of 50 random numbers for 10 seconds and recite the whole thing.

Kirkland looks like a beast. He physically doesn't look like a freshman and then you add the fact that he is an EE. Sky's the limit.

I wouldnt write off anyone like Jakob or Bryant if they get beat out. This staff has always made it pretty clear they do not want their guys playing 80-90 snaps a game like AJ and JRM had to at times. They want a solid rotation where there can give starters a break and have minimal dropoff

Exactly. The defense was looking pretty worn by the Mizzou game.

In team news, Darrin Kirkland Jr. has been in a sling since Monday because the freshman linebacker from Indianapolis suffered a torn pectoral muscle. Kirkland Jr. is expected to miss four months as a result of the injury, robbing him of his chance on the field in spring camp. Still, Kirkland remains an impressive prospect moving forward and even more so with his mental preparation since arriving earlier this month. The loss of Kirkland for the spring, obviously makes a thin middle linebacker position even thinner. Depending on how much he gets to work, look for Dillon Bates to get some work in the middle this spring.

So as of right now, our only two healthy MLBs are Greg Bryant and Kenny Bynum.

With the wealth of options we have at OLB (JRM, Weatherd, Bates, Maggit (situationally), McDowell, Berry, and now Sapp and Smith), you've gotta think that Bates or another OLB gets some looks at MLB this spring.

Where is Bates in terms of rehab ?
He is full go ?

He needs to bulk up for MLB position.

JRM should get some looks as well.
Also Jakob Johnson ..

Torn pec sucks. Have seen one once and it is gross as heck. Jakob's progression just became even more important.

Man that is whack for DKJR. He was ready for the work he had to put in. He still could get on the field but it's a bummer he is missing four prime months to get bigger and more familiar with the defense. Hopefully it's jthe only setback he has, we need him to be skrong

I'm not sure if Bates is a full go yet, but barring any setbacks he definitely should be by spring ball.

I think JRM is a perfect fit for WLB and it may be a waste to slide him inside where he'd have to fight off more OL. But I'm sure the coaches will do whatever is best.

Jakob had shoulder surgery after the bowl game, so I'm not sure if he'll be ready for spring ball or not. Personally I think a redshirt could be good for him and that a role similar to Maggit's might be the best fit for him in the long run. He seems better at attacking than reading and reacting.
