"Tennessee is the right fit for me, because it's a great school that's close to home," Kirkland exclusively told VolQuest.com. "Coach Jones is doing a great job there, and I just felt like it fit my game and everything that I want to do academically.

"Extremely excited. I moved up to (today) because it just felt like the right time for me to do it. You just want to shut things off after the dead period yesterday. So I just decided to announce."

"Just excited to get to work, come in with a mindset that I am that guy," Kirkland said, "and I have to do the best that I can and 'Rise To The Top' like Tennessee says."

Darrin's Coach
"I've been fortunate enough that this is the third SEC linebacker in a row that I've coached, and I think the big thing about Darrin is that he's just the most complete linebacker I've coached," said Lawrence Central defensive coordinator Steve Tutze, who has a longstanding relationship with Jones and his Tennessee staff. "Very student of the game, very athletic. I think presence is a big word, too. When he was out our lineup, we weren't very good. The idea of him coming back, brought that presence. All the great ones raise the level of play of everybody else, and that's Darrin Kirkland.

"Yes, he has a lot of God-given ability but he's also a student of the football game. I think that's what's great for Tennessee, great for Coach (John) Jancek and those guys. He's going to be called on to make some split-second checks, and not everybody can do that. He can do that. I think he's ready to do it."

Added Lawrence Central head coach Jed Richman, "He's a very cerebral kid, the kind of kid that can make on-the-field changes. He's a pretty mild-mannered guy off the field but has a switch. Coaches talk about that, flipping a switch when you hit the field. And he has an explosiveness that I've not seen in high school at the linebacker position. I've coached 12 years and in our league, which I'm proud of. He's one of the best if not the best to come out of here. They're all a little different, but he's very explosive."
