'15 IN LB Darrin Kirkland Jr (UT Commit 12/15/14)

Honest question.. But based on talent, speed, and what they bring to the table would u all trade Cherry for Kirkland? I know Cherry will be a Vol and is one of my fav recruits, just wondered what you all thought about it.

Not at this point. Before Cherry ever committed? Maybe.

Any specific reason? Cherry is a run stuffing, mean SOB that will make it difficult for teams to run on us. However, like AJ, his lateral speed isn't the quickest and might have some coverage problems like AJ did his first few years here. Again s and c in college will do him wonders and he will be a great player for us, just thought it'd be fun to discuss.

Athleticism is not the end all be all. Also you're going to be hard pressed to find a mlb that doesn't struggle in coverage. People expecting them to cover slots, running backs, and tight ends consistently are not being realistic.

The days of run stopping almost seems unwarranted anymore. The game is moving to speed and passing offenses, trickling down from the NFL. We as UT fans see first hand nickel as essentially base defense with one or two linebackers. I'm not saying dump Cherry. I love Cherry. I just think the conversation about the games evolution is an interesting one. What will defenses look like in 5-10 years?

A player like Cecil Cherry may not be as covetedin the future as he is now. Think about a defense with no linebackers on the field. Just a ton of hybrid guys running around.

Thought?

I think it comes down to heart. Cheery plays with heart. He doesn't take plays off, and he loves football. Those are guys I want on my team. We can make him better in coverage, but you can't teach heart.

In regards to your first sentence, we still play Bama and Ga every year. We need run stuffers and it's not even a debate.

Would love to add another LB, and him being from NapTown doesn't hurt my opinion of him lol. I like his game, he is a good player. Strictly MLB or not, I'd be all for adding anther LB, we need the depth. Adding depth with high rated and high potwntial prospects can't hurt. Him and adding OT would be cool with this Vol fan.

Indianapolis (Ind.) Lawrence Central Top247 linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. took his second official visit of the process to Oklahoma this past weekend.
The former Michigan pledge arrived in Norman with a top five of "Tennessee, Ole Miss, Texas, Oklahoma and USC."
Moving forward, the Sooners remain strongly in the mix.
"I see a great fit, especially playing under Coach Kish and Coach Stoops," Kirkland said. "Their scheme fits my game exactly, so I really liked that."
A U.S. Army All-American, the 247Sports Composite ranks Kirkland as the country's No. 4 inside linebacker. This was his first time at Oklahoma.
"Was definitely learning about everything," Kirkland said. "They made it worth the trip, especially spending time with my good friend Ryan Newsome the whole weekend."

The big difference for his freshman and sophomore year versus AJ's freshman and sophomore year are the coaching staff. He will have a coaching staff that can coach him up and fix that perceived weakness.

Yes please. Give me both

Newsome's recent visit was an official, wasn't it? Would be nice if we could get them both here on an official together.

I get the feeling that Kirkland, Newsome, and Richmond all end up at Ole Miss. Did they all 3 take OVs together to Oklahoma this past weekend?
