In some ways I can't believe it's been that long, but then when I remember the details of the day it dawns on me how long ago it was.

I first heard about it because I was chatting on AOL Instant Messenger (remember that?) with a friend at work and we were talking about football or video games or something stupid and out of nowhere he said "What's going on in NYC"?

I then tried to get on Fox News and CNN's websites and nothing. We didn't have a working TV or cable in the office so someone found a TV in a conference room and we tried to pick up a local station and finally got it right as the first tower collapsed.

I thought that was what the thread was going to be about, but then a certain poster stated that this was an act attributable to all of Islam. I just could not let such a bigoted, ignorant comment go unaddressed.

It was my first semester in college. I had an early class and I was running late. We had a large TV in the lobby of the dorm, and there were several people crowded around it, but I was in too big a rush to see what they were watching.

It was when I got to class that our professor told us what was going on. That's how I learned about the attacks. I will never forget the look on his face. Classes were cancelled and I got back to the dorm in time to see the second tower fall.

It seemed like something out of a movie.

The odds are 100% because it happened.

I initially though of pointing out how truly stupid you look with this post, but thought that you were merely ignorant. There is a really good PBS special entitled "Why the buildings fell". It exactly why these buildings fell in the manner they did. Basically, the floors were clearspan to a central core and the skin of the buildings were in fact structural rather than a skin like on most high rises. The fire was so intense from the burning jet fuel that the metal did yield as you assert above. When the joists sagged enough, they pulled in the exterior skin and viola'... an implosion. Of course I will bet you think is was some sort of conspiracy in the US government.

Hug a member of the most peace loving religion ever today and thank them for their contribution to world peace. I notice all the remembrances from them on this dark day.

Sorry. Never. I look at that hole in the skyline every time I go to work. I know who caused it and why. It is inexcusable and unforgivable. Maybe you can forgive and forget, but I cannot. If you don't like that then you need to stfu and respect others' feelings on this matter..

This is quite possible, but the inner core should've remained intact.

I'm not saying that it was an inside job, however, there are basic laws of physics that these collapses defy. Jmo

Imagine stacking 10 cinder blocks on top of the other. Take a gun and shoot the 6th or 7th block out. Will the remaining 2 or 3 blocks create enough force to pancake the remaining ones to the ground?

Watch the show that I mentioned. You are trying to do a thought experiment that is completely different. The sagging joists pulled both directions. I have no problem with the explanations I have seen. The buildings were well over 1000' tall. I had dinner at Windows On The World once and looked DOWN on helicopters and airplanes flying by. The kinetic energy generated by the top floors falling must have been phenominal. The muslims hit a grand slam home run that day.

Seems some have forgotten what it felt like that day.


I said a prayer for those that lost their lives and their family members this morning, I do it every year.

I've read (years ago) that during the construction on the towers (working off memory here) that asbestos coated steel beams were banned somewhere around the 70th or so floor. The planes hit above that, the resulting heat melted the non-coated beams and they collapsed.

Seems like some think that 3,000 Americans dying is something that deserves some sort of annual commemoration and remembrance. Yet, many of those same persons give two ****s about non-Americans being killed in numbers that vastly surpass the measly 3,000 number.

Yeah, the attack was unjust and the killings were murder. Agreed. Move the **** on.

It was in vain. The entire GWOT is in vain. In fact, the entire hyper-reactive response to 9-11 is in vain.

Further, I would argue that underlying all of these 'remembrances' is just the bull-**** desire for vengeance.

It's vendetta driven. Sweet.

One of the things I remember reading about was that the airplanes basically shredded when they hit and the aluminum fragments essentially sand blasted the fireproofing off of the metal joists (mostly web joists) then the intense fire from the burning fuel and the stage was set.

I agree, we don't need memorials, tears, moments of silence or anything similar. Our monument should have been the total annihilation of radical islam.

Should have led with that. I was wondering wtf was going on.

I agree it's sad that we only care a lot about Americans. Like the 132 Pakistani school children that got lined up and executed had nothing on Sandy Hook.

I agree that every life matters equally, but you are going about it the wrong way, IMO.

Two things are true:

The way the country came together and rallied around each other and the victims in the immediate aftermath made me proud to be an American.

The way we later handled the political discourse over it brought me back to the reality that the tragedy was going to be used to further broader political agendas (by both R's and D's and everyone in between), and still is being used for that purpose, and that just makes me sad.

Your point is that it was an inside job and that the govt./administration (whoever) surreptitiously did it to justify its Middle East/corporate intentions. Taking that into consideration, does it really matter if the towers collapsed? The crashes alone were sufficient.

As for the actual issue, yes, it was an unforgettable day. Still remember watching them collapse while sitting in my high school journalism/newspaper class.
