'14 TN WR Josh Malone (UT commit 12/4/13)

A bit of a long shot, is he not? I thought that Georgia and UCLA were 1a and 1b by a wide margin.

I think the stories about Malone's recruitment have been generated by paranoia since he is pretty quiet about the process. I think Malone had shown interest in UT, but, because he didn't declare UT the leader, etc., and remained quiet, rumors abounded that Malone was uninterested. These morphed into UGA, UCLA, and (I think) Notre Dame all leading for his services at various times. There now appears to be comments from Hubbs and Co. that Malone has regained interest in UT (whether he has regained interest or just confirmed his interest is anyone's guess). I think Malone is a toss-up player that the coaches and players (and the fans) would love to have in orange, but he is going to measure his options and look at UGA, UCLA, and some other schools before making a final choice. He does not offer up much information and I expect this board will continue to speculate since he won't provided much concrete details.

I'm no scout, but having this guy ranked over tk2 doesn't seem right. He's good and I'd love to have him, but he doesn't seem in the same leagueas TK.

TK2 committed early and went to a few camps. Malone has camped and remains open. Both are great TN studs though.

Apparently he is now number #30 in the top 100. 5th star.

Nabbing him, Hurd, Jackson and Garrett and Blair would be a nice way to finish. I know long shot but would be nice.

And I know Hurd is ours already, just saying for ratings sake, now that he is a 5* he will improve our ratings even more

They play different positions on the field. I do not see the issue.

I mean, I didn't realize two players had to play the same position for their ability and college-readiness to be compared to each other.

Was JMO, TK2 seems to be a more dominant, college-ready player than Malone.

They different positions. Why worry about one being rated higher than the other?

If they both become Volunteers, welcome them with a smile.

I agree on that, but comparing recruits to each other is kind of what people do on here, right? That's why recruiting services even exist?

Yep, lol, and that's why they have a position ranking and "overall" ranking. Which is what you were referring to.

We only had (5) 4 star players last year and we could feasibly have 5 (maybe more) top 100 players this year. FWIW I think Helm ends up a top 100 player eventually and Malone gets his 5th star.

Still learning to speak "Hubbs-ese" Ron. Is there an additional meaning in what Hubbs said here or is it just straightforward?

I think off the record Hubbs would tell you that Malone is UT's to lose at this point. On the record, "They're near the top and have been for awhile." JMO

Pretty much. You can tell he definitely likes where we are with him right now. If we end up getting Malone do you think one of our commits just happens to look around, or do we just try to let the numbers work themselves out?

I think Malone is a take no matter what. CBJ will make the numbers work out somehow.

I think off the record Hubbs would tell you like everyone else has that he doesn't know...

This kid is hard to read. Getting him on campus was huge and I think Hubbs is using that as to say that TN is right in the thick of things, which he would be right in saying. Truth is this one is far from over and its going to be one of those that you don't where he's going til he announces.

There's only so much coaching will do to improve a WR's ability to catch a ball. As hard as VN has been on Worley (much of it justified) he can't make the catch himself, and regardless of Worley's future, it seems to me that we are going to be better in the future at getting balls in the hand of receivers than they are at catching them. Malone seems like a bright kid and can clearly see that we need guys who can catch, and guys that can catch will play early. That can't hurt our chances.
