'14 TN RB Jalen Hurd (UT commit 3/14/13)

Size-Strength-Speed
This is a tall, straight-line runner with a lengthy, muscular frame and very good top-end speed. Perhaps has better measurables than a natural RB skill set. Lacks the compact, low center of gravity build sought-after in college back.

Vision/Patience
Vision is good as he follow his blocks, sees the second-level cutback and will also bounce out of a cloudy hole -- but he's lacking natural pick and slide skill set. Is more of an upright slasher who is at his best when he has a vertical crease to hit and does not have to make yards on his own.

Agility/Acceleration
When he does hit a north/south seam, he can be very dangerous with his acceleration and shiftiness. Can speed cut in the open field and has some big play speed and elusiveness. Will beat poor pursuit angles and has some big-play ability with the ball in his hands.

Power/Balance
Is not a power guy (yeah right) but has wiry strength and when he builds a head of steam he can be difficult to wrap up and bring down. Shows good toughness with multi-carry ability at the high school level but we feel his high-cut frame could expose his body for direct hits in college, raising future durability concerns. Breaks tackles but at times it looks like inferior competition that he is running through. We see the potential for quality yards after contact in college if he can fill out his somewhat leaner frame and develop more power through hips and lower body and learn to run more behind his pads.

Bottom Line
Hurd is somewhat of a combination of 2013 prospects Thomas Tyner, who signed with Oregon, and Ty Isaac, who signed with USC. Overall, he is a dynamic prospect who will make things happen. Has returner skills as well and could project at a number of different positions -- RB, H-Back, TE, WR, OLB or S. Has the size, range and ball skills that really project high as a back-end defender. A big, fast and athletic player who performs at a high level but competition looks marginal at times.

For what it's worth, I think they definitely got this one wrong in a lot of places. Hurd is the real deal.

The dude is the real deal if he does not get hurt for sure on Sundays.

Whoever wrote that evaluation is a hack...
Maybe they werent paying attention to all the other
All star campers in Ohio who were in disbelief that he
was a RB after he trucked About half a dozen of them...

And 6'3" RB's usually dont have low centers of gravity
Because,well, they are 6'3"...

I remember reading this awhile ago. It was an assessment written by Chad Simmons after one of Hurd's first games last year. They don't have a clue.

He's almost 230 and they project him at safety? Would be nice but if he played defense he'd be all sec at LB if anything

Remember he was around 207 when this was written...doesn't make it less wrong

So this assessment is before 3500 yards and almost 50 td's? While missing or sitting out a lot of plays?

NIIIIIIIIIIIICE... They might want to reassess...

:)Jalen is the next Eric Dickerson, now thats half of the express, Paulk the other half.

Volunteer Express will outperform the smu pony express AND for only the cost of 2 football scholarships...compared to the rumoured excessive fees paid to the pony express :)

I'm not a scout, but even amateurs can realize that's a garbage analysis in some regards. Not a power guy? I should have stopped before that statement, but that was all I could take.

If any RB in the country should be wearing a cape to the game, it's Hurd. And instead of an "S," the lettering should be "IT"....cause that's what he's got....and lots of IT.

His tape looks like it was scripted on a Hollywood set...it's so unreal. I've not been this stoked about a RB recruit since Jamal Lewis.
