'14 TN RB Jalen Hurd (UT commit 3/14/13)

Wins, not 100-yard games or the record-breaking 3,300-yard season Hurd engineered along the way to leading his Beech High School to the state's 5A championship a year ago, are the perpetual target.

"Definitely, that's one of my main goals. I always want to do good, but I always want my team to win," Hurd told VolQuest.com during a recent visit to his school.

He doesn't aspire to blend the power running of Arian Foster with the speed of Chris Johnson. Sure, Hurd watches other running backs.

But his goal is to be his own person --- and perhaps show in so doing that taller players on the football field don't have to be wideouts, quarterbacks or defenders.

"I want to be something different. Because in my mind, I've never seen a 6-4 running back running a 4.3. So that's where I want to be at," Hurd revealed. "I'm not sure where I'm at right now; I'm not sure if I'm running a 4.3 right now, but that's where I want to model my game. Just something that people have never seen before."

"Really, I just give it all to God. I couldn't do anything without Him. I think about it; I pray about it. And I think I handle situations pretty well because of him. Just staying humble and not being arrogant about things. When someone asks how was your game, I'm not going to be like 'Oh, it was all me. No, it was my team. They helped me through that game.' You always handle situations through Him."

When the nfl network first came out, they had a commercial with coaches giving suggestions on shows they could host. Bill Cowher came on and said "I got it... The coach Cowher... Power Hour". For some reason it made me crack up and I started to appreciate coach Cowher. SIAP

UT coaches measured him at 6-3¾, said Crabtree, who adds that Hurd now weighs between 232 and 235 pounds...

The greatest concern about Hurd entering his senior season might be that he could outgrow his position...But when Hurd clutches a football and darts for an opening, you don’t notice his height.

“Even though he’s 6-3, his pad level is very good,” Crabtree said. “He runs like a 5-10 running back.”

Hurd has something else going for him as a running back. It’s his position of choice.

“That’s why he does not want to go to Alabama,” Crabtree said. “When he went to Alabama last summer and they split the players up, they asked him to come work with the safeties."

"I definitely want to try to play right away," said Hurd, who galloped for 3,357 yards and 43 touchdowns in helping Beech (Tenn.) High go 15-0 last fall. "I'm just going to try to be the best back I can be and help lead this team back to where it was and get back to the glory days."

"He said he's going to go back to a Pro-Style offense with a little shotgun in there and that's great," Hurd said. "It gives an opportunity for wide receivers to get their action with the quarterback. It's duel threat."

"Yes sir. Hopefully I'll be in the mix or starting my freshman year — that's my goal because I'm enrolling early."

"It's just a whole different style," Hurd said of the bonus weight. "I wouldn't say I was small last year, but I wasn't as big as many people, my weight wasn't. But, if I can have the different styles with speed and have that weight to back me up, that's something that's hard to stop. So, that's what I'm trying to get at.

"I've always wanted to be that weight (230) since I was a freshman. I've just been progressing and working as hard as I can to get it."

"My main thing this year is I just want to get us another ring. Anywhere they put me on the field, I just want to get us a ring. I can play guard, I don't care. I've really got everything in place that I want and thank God for that. I'm just trying to help my team get a ring," Hurd said.

Absolutely. You can really get a gage on how good a recruits going to be based on his off field work ethic and it seems like Jalen puts in the work when he's out of pads. This kid's going to be awesome.

I think he got a slight bump on 247 to #11. I might be seeing things, but I could have sworn he was like 15 or 16 a bit ago. I'm going crazy...

Saban still calling Hurd is all I need to know about his 5* status. He is the elite of the elite and we shouldn't care that Rivals doesn't recognize that.

Rivals eventually gave Ty Isaac a 5th star, Jalen should get one at some point. IIIRC, they basically said he didn't get it because they were concerned about how his height would translate to college. But yeah, if he doesn't get it who cares?
