Kid has some interest from some good schools, wonder if it equate to offers. Is this kid good?

I hate cold-blooded sarcasm on this site as much as anybody, but the fact that we're talking about this guy as a sophomore probably means that he's at least SEC scholarship offer good. Whether or not he'll be good at the next level, who has a clue.

Yes. Alex is the younger brother of Blake Bars (future Michigan OL) and Brad Bars (Current LB at Penn State). Comes from a very good HS in Nashville (One of, if not the best programs in the state supposedly) and obviously has a great family background for football.

A Top 2014 in-state prospect. Could play DE/DT or OG/OT.

De'Vinner Combine (held at former Vol Will Bartholomew's D1 Camp in Franklin) posted Alex Bars' measurements and stats as:
6'7"
278
Powerball Throw 42' *Best
Verticle of nearly 30"

"Bars didn't participate in every event at the combine but shined during actual football portion of the competition, impressing in one-on-ones with his length and quick movement." - Byron De'Vinner

His dad, Joe, played at ND.

"I started off on defense this morning. The coaches told me they liked my balance and my quick feet. In the afternoon they switched me over to play offensive tackle and I think they liked me there, just with my base and my footwork," Bars related when asked what he felt the coaches saw up close that led to an offer being extended on the spot.

"I just wanted to come up and try my hardest. I wasn't hung up on getting an offer or anything. I'm glad they did though. It's really exciting to get that first offer, but I really didn't expect it."

"It's still really early for me, it's exciting to get this offer, especially from a school like Tennessee, that's big, but I plan on taking my time and going through the process a little bit," Bars said of a recruitment that's in the earliest possible stages. "I've got a lot of family and friends that are Tennessee fans, so getting this offer was a big deal."

Has offers from UT, UK, Vandy, Miss. St., Michigan, and UNC. No new offers, but he is hearing from Nebraska, Clemson, and Wisconsin. He wants to go to games at PSU, Michigan, UT, and Vandy games, and possibly a Bama game this fall.

As stated earlier, his family is full of current and former players. His brother plays at PSU, and he says he will still consider PSU despite the sanctions although they will ultimately play a factor.

Interesting note - apparently all of his offers to this point are to play OT, but he has only played defense for MBA.

Per 247 -

Said he had a lot of fun at the game. He got to see the facilities, Vol Walk, and talked to Coach Pittman before the game. He said he liked UT, but the visit made him like UT "a little more." He compared the game atmosphere to Michigan and said they were pretty comparable.

He said tOSU, Bama, and Nebraska are recruiting him very hard. Just about everyone is recruiting him as an OT. He playes both ways for his HS, MBA.

Great kid I hope we get him. He comes from a football family... Dad played at Notre Dame and has two older brothers: Brad (plays at Penn State DE) and Blake (plays at Michigan OL). He is the best of them all and has a lot of potential. Will be one of the top prospects in the state for his class next year...

"I just remember it was an awesome game, really exciting. Like 103,000 fans going nuts and just a great game to see what Tennessee's all about," Bars said.

"I talked to coach Pittman, the o-line coach, and coach Chaney," Bars said. "They said that I'm doing well and they've seen my film and they really like what they saw and they were telling me to keep doing well."

"I play both. I play offensive tackle and nose guard and defensive end," Bars said. "But, I did camp this summer and they saw me as a defense end and they like me there but they like me more at offensive tackle so that's where they offered me, actually. They like my athleticism and they like my defensive edge on the offensive side of the ball."

"A few years ago when my brothers were being recruited I went to a Tennessee-Georgia game. But, I went to their spring practices so I have a good feel for their team and the games," Bars said.

"I know it's a great up and coming program and great tradition there and everything," Bars said.

"Probably what the coaches are like, what the program is like and how they play and how the coaches respond and how the players respond to different situations in the game and watching them warm up is pretty awesome," Bars said.
