People place too much stock in star ratings. Patrick Willis should have been a Vol, but somebody obviously thought three stars were not good enough. Give us a half dozen just like Gaulden. He looks great. Besides, even if a guy really is a three star, which is not the case here -- he's objectively better than that -- if he's a homegrown guy and he has heart and character, that's worth at least another star in my book.

I agree with you about the stars. Except for 5* guys, they usually turn out special. If they are a flop it's usually because of some off the field stuff. There have been a couple who flopped on the field, but most turn out to be very solid players and lots of times stars. I think the most important thing to look at is their offers. If SEC schools are offering then he's probably a good prospect no matter how many stars he has. When I look at recruits I look at their offers not their stars.

But guys like Da'Rick weren't busts. Janzen Jackson wasn't a bust either. Bryce Brown wasn't either.

I classify busts as guys that aren't anywhere near good football players. Those guys all helped us win games and early on.

Oh and another 5 star was Eric Berry. We know how that turned out.

Juwuan James was a 5-star as well on 247.

Very few 5*'s Tennessee has landed have been "busts". Guys like BB, JJ and Da'Rick were most definitely not busts. There is a huge difference between being a bust and guys who contribute big-time before either getting kicked off the team or transferring.

bust might've been the wrong word, then. my point is that recently we seem to have the most high profile players that have high profile issues and don't finish out at UT (Janzen Jackson, Bryce brown, da'rick Rogers).

Brooks, O Neal, Fisher... all 5 star kids who didn't live up to expectations in mid 2000s. That and the countless 4 stars who were dismissed or didn't perform led to Fulmers downfall.
