'14 TN DB Emmanuel Smith

Question for those who've watched the film or actually seen him play, is this young man strictly a safety? Does he have the hips to play corner? Does he have the body to grow into a LB? I'm curious about his versatility.

Why not? Helps with his brother and we get to stick it to Vandy.

Even when they win, they still lose.

We'll be sticking it to Vandy on the field for the foreseeable future. If we had the room, might be developed into OLB, but I wouldn't use up anymore '15 spots. IMO, next year we'll have lots of options, and wouldn't be surprised to get Josh even without his bro.

I feel like he ends up as a real solid college OLB

This is what had me curious. He's what 6'2" - 6'3"? Runs a 4.4 at 200 lbs reportedly? If he has the body to put on 20-25 lbs of muscle without losing speed, he could be a great LB. These are the type of kids Chief used to drool over. Athletic LBs are lethal in the SEC.

He went to Vandy because Tennessee wanted him as an OLB. He wants to play S.

Makes sense. Kid might be able to ball out, but we're loaded at S in this class. If he's unwilling to consider a position change, then best for him to go elsewhere. I think it kind of sad though because these young men get set in their thinking about "this" is the position I want to play and close themselves off to the idea that they could be better at another position. When we signed Al Wilson, wasn't he listed as a RB? Imagine if he had refused to switch to LB. Lord what a loss that would have been.

Who among our current commits would you drop for him?

Just speculation on my part....If we don't pull another RB would one of the Berrys or Kelly get a shot there and then Smith is a take at S/OLB? Then let things shake out however?

Not close to a 4.4 guy. He ran a 4.70 at the Memphis Nike Combine that had multiple players run sub 4.4.

He is a 4.75 40 undersized OLB. Nothing special about him.

You've obviously dug deeper than I have so I'll defer to your analysis, but some people have seen something that makes them think he has something special. I have no idea what it is they think they see, but he'll have his chance to show who's right at the next level. I just hope he doesn't have any big games against us. Always stings when a home state kid tears you up.

I know earlier in the process I hoped we would land this kid, cause it would help with his brother next year who looks to be one of the best LBs in the nation.

I always pull for TN kids to sign with UT when we can get them. I think this kid was a take 6 months ago, but probably not any more. Taking him would help a lot with landing Josh in 2015 at LB. With that said, I think the LB class and who we stand to get for 2015 should be ok with or w/out Josh.

It could always play out where franklin continues to shop himself around and at some point, a school decides to take him as their new HC. Then Josh goes to UT and Emmanuel looks to transfer in with his brother. JMO

UT still recruiting Smith?

Yes, they still communicate some. Right now, Tennessee is it working with one or two spots but I wouldn't be surprised if he visited if a few of Tennessee's commits took visits this month.

So he is saying if we start having guys visit other schools then we may push harder?

Who do we have looking at other schools possibly?

Bryant, Thomas, McDowell and Weatherd are the ONLY ones I could think of being a risk to lose.

The last two being very unlikely to lose.
